“BD” refers to Franco-Belgian comics, but let's open things up to include ALL Euro comics and GN's. Euro-style work from around the world is also welcome!

I had an idea yesterday, so let's see how you like it. Below are sequences from ten classic BD series in which a well-known character is about to first appear. How many can you guess? (hint: these appear alphabetically by character name)

This is hard, I either did not read those series or I read them like twenty-thirty years ago! All I can guess is Nr 2 might be the Professor, Nr 8 one of the Daltons and Nr 10 maybe Pirlouit\Peewit\Pfiffikus because there is his goat in the last panel.

The Daltons have already been established at that point, so the new character is someone they're about to meet. Astrid might not like them.

Nr 10 maybe Pirlouit\Peewit\Pfiffikus because there is his goat in the last panel.

  3. Could be so many characters, no idea :)

  5. Kriss van Valnor? No idea for the remaining ones.

My European comic knowledge is very limited :) Should have more Jommeke, Kiekeboe and Suske and Wiske! ;)

Two & five are correct! Very nice guessing Kriss, as that was one of the hardest ones IMO.

I can definitely do the latter at some point, but of the first two, I suspect they aren't well-known outside Belge. Feel free to post about them here sometime to help people get a taste..

Oh, 8 must be the brothers dalton?

The art style of 10 reminds me of Johan and Peewit, but I'm probably wrong. Don't know the comic enough to remember individual characters. Also looks a bit like Smurfs. Basically Peyo artstyle :)

Very good. Now who did they meet there?

Absolutely correct. The first appearance of the Smurfs was in J&P, and they were disguised as we see above. (notice the blue foot and hand sticking out)

Also, going through my own comics, The asterix one (3) is ofcourse Idefix! Forgot he didn't appear right from the start. Haven't read them in ages!

That's where my guesses end. I have not read any of the other comics. I did found out that Wake is from the first panel. Looks cool, will check it out.

Yes. RanTanPlan, excellent.

Sillage (Wake) is the best sci-fi series I've ever read in BD. I'll have to turn the spotlight towards that one soon!

Donjon mentioned ! I had no idea this comic was even known outside of french speaking communities. I don't remember who appears there though. ~~My first guess is Guillaume de la Cour~~ I missed the part about these being the first appearance of a character. So it's not Guillaume de la Cour

I'll give you a couple hints:

  1. It's one of the ~four core characters of the series.

  2. At the time he's just a low-level type, working for the keeper. And we already know he's not Marvin the dragon.

That's gotta be Herbert then. Which fits because I think this excerpt might be from issue #1 of the Zenith series. But technically, in the universe's chronology he does appear once before that moment (in the Monsters issue about Jean-Jean I think)... But it was also released after/during the Zenith run in the real world iirc.

It's basically a cameo, he appears for like 3 panels at most. The group knocks at the dungeon's door and he's the one who greets them.
