New around here? Want to introduce yourself? Here's a thread! Or if that whole practice makes you want to disappear, uh...Make someone up, or introduce your pet instead!

Whatever floats your boat, and hey, if you have a boat, introduce that boat!

Oh, and before I forget (again), I've written a relatively brief FAQ to help folks find their way around here.

Hello there! I'm a fellow Reddit refugee that quit after 10 years when Apollo shut down. I've got two very silly pups named Pippin and Sunny, a tortoise named Bowser, and a gerbil named Oreo.

I've been gaming since the 80's and haven't slowed down a bit. I'm currently playing WoW, Diablo 4, Tears of the Kingdom and Final Fantasy 16. I'd have to say that my favorite games of all time are Portal 1 and 2. I'm a big nerd and I love Legos, movies, books, art and ice cold martinis.

I'm very happy to be here :)

Wow it's crazy having an intro thread - it's like a forum from 25 years ago! I love Lemmy feeling quite small and welcoming like this, awesome.

I am in the UK, have followed through various platforms since the 90s. I am old and sensible as my grown up screen name suggests.

I write and play a lot of table top roleplaying games (TTRPGs)!

*crumbles into dust*

I kid, but welcome! Speaking of TTRPGs, have you seen where some of these are on Itch.io these days? I've never gotten into them myself (not much for RPGs personally, and I don't have a tabletop group to play with), but I've found some of the art & settings interesting!

[-] trouser_mouse@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

There are so many on itch - I have my games on there! The indie TTRPG scene is thriving and bigger than ever - I play mostly online, and Discord is a huge part of that nowadays. Very active communities!

Hello all! Was a reddit lurker for most of 13 years. Now I'm a new dad trying to find time for my hobbies (video games, drawing badly, and TTRPGs). I just moved back to the US after living in China for almost 9 years as a teacher.

[-] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Hey all! I live in the Southern US. I'm an IT director. Hobbies include lifting weights, manga/manhwa/manhua, RPGs (currently running a D&D 5E campaign and playing in an OSRIC campaign), and cooking.

I deleted my Reddit account a few days ago, including all my posts and comments. I'm all in. Lemmy has been fantastic.

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Isn't Lemmy great? I feel so positive about the Internet for the first time in years. Welcome.

[-] xodiak@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Hello! I'm 58 and I just signed up here tonight. I'm fairly techy. I remember connecting to various BBS while in school with my 24k modem on my Tandy 1000 from Radio Shack. But this is all a bit overwhelming and a little confusing. I'm committed to getting the hang of it all and ditching the other place. Picture of my dog that likes to sit on rocks.

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I honestly miss all the local BBSs and FIDOnet. Life was much simpler.

[-] bobroberts@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I’m new here and just wanted to try to post something to see if I understand the process. (I’m an old man who thinks and moves slowly)

Hey. I'm a Reddit refugee, long time internet lurker, and general weirdo. This is my absolute first Lemmy comment, so um... hi. Here's my dog as toll.

[-] knowsomeofit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Also why is Jack sideways I am so confused.

Hello! I'm also from Reddit, for like 11yrs. I usually don't post anything online ever, but I am going to try to contribute here sometimes. :) My hobbies/interests are anything Pokémon, arts and crafts, reading, TV, gaming, cats, cooking, plants, Critical Role and paranormal/true crime podcasts. I have 2 doofy cats, Loki and Xandis. Currently, I am super duper excited for Baldur's Gate 3! Also excited to make hopefully the best potato salad I've ever made tomorrow.

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Any suggestions for paranormal podcasts?

[-] xNekoyaki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yess! :) Astonishing Legends is what really got me into paranormal podcasts! They have good host chemistry, it's fun to listen to them. They go on tangents a lot. Highly recommend the Mothman, Black Eyed Kids and Vertical Plane episodes! And That's Why We Drink is fun, it's a couple of friends, one tells a paranormal story, one tells a true crime story. This Paranormal Life is sillier, they take turns telling each other paranormal stories, then they vote on whether they think it's real or not. Haunted Road - host tells a story about a place, then speaks to someone who works there and they discuss what they've experienced there, or what guests have experienced. Scared To Death - a couple tell each other scary stories, and try to scare each other. Spooked - different people telling their paranormal stories every episode. This one is usually really well made, the stories are really interesting! Used to be mostly a premium subscription podcast, but is now free!

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks!

I know And That's Why We Drink and Haunted Road. They've gotten off the radar in a podcatcher move a couple of years ago. I'll have to check out the others.

Do you ever catch The Ghost Story Guys or Unexplained? Wild Thing is also pretty good; it's produced by a couple of former NPR reporter/producers. For true crime, what do you think of The Opportunist?

How's the potato salad? ;)

[-] xNekoyaki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Awesome! Haha, I haven't heard of The Ghost Story Guys or The Opportunist, but I'm going to check them out! :) any episode recommendations? I do have Wild Thing in my subscribed podcasts, but I don't know if I've listened yet, going to download some eps! It turned out great! Homemade mayo! :D

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Season one of The Opportunist is a multipart documentary about a single person. It would be hard to make episode recommendations, although any of the one- and two-shot stories in the second season are good. The Ghost Story Guys best episodes are late season one and anything up to the end of 2020. In January 2021, one of the hosts was replaced and the show format became a lot looser and much longer.

Homemade mayo is the best! Especially if it's made with bacon grease rather than another oil. :)

[-] xNekoyaki@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Awesome! :) I'm listening to the Gayle Palmer episodes now, very interesting! Thanks for the recommendation!

Oooh, I haven't tried bacon grease before, that sounds amazing! Gotta put that on my to-do list, haha.

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

You’re welcome.

We found bacon grease mayo by accident when we discovered that there was no olive oil in the pantry. It’s one of the go-to versions now.

[-] cshock@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I was an 11 year Reddit member, deleted my account yesterday.

Been here for a few hours and my nerves have already calmed, this feels like home!

[-] Kuma@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Hello 👋 I will first introduce my 10 year old cat Simba. He loves going outside and smell trees and flowers. He do not like to play for long because he hates losing. Loves cuddles and is very social with everyone. He sleeps a lot too close by 😂

And my self (with out Pic).

I am a developer. I like reading Manga and manhwa, play games, do any kind of physical activity with others. I also seem to like lemmy a lot because I have never written this much publicly before.

Thanks for having me :D

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Snazzy looking keyboard as well! Are you a mechanical keyboard enthusiast?

[-] Kuma@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I am all about it in a reasonable budget. It can be so extremely expensive very easily 😂 It should feel great but it doesn't have to be perfect. These are ec Sakura from varmilo :D they are great!

[-] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Simba's beautiful, and that's a cute pic. That's how my and my significant other's cat is, he loves to lay on our keyboards when we're working or gaming. There's nothing quite like having a pet in close proximity to spam the F1 Help button when they're sleepy.

Hello!! I just signed up! I'm still trying to figure everything out over here. Been on reddit for 10 years or so and thought I'd check out all this.

Not much to say about myself really... I'm quite boring.

[-] LongPigFlavor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hello. I'm a a Reddit refugee, I mostly lurked though. I'm in my mid 20s. Here are my birds.

[-] MrsDoyle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hi! Here are a few of my wee friends - they're very hard workers and I'm very proud of them.

Crappy photo because it's hard taking a photo in a bee suit and gloves. :-)

Hey everyone, velvet here :) I am a developer with a revolving door of interests and hobbies. Lately I've been interested in true crime/horror, the Sims, aerial sports, and hanging out with my cat and two aussie pups! This is my first time joining the Fediverse after 12 years on Reddit, nice to meet you all!

Hello world.

I mostly do tabletop hobby projects, I’ve got both a huge backlog to post and some new stuff coming up. I also do generally creative projects including worldbuilding a little scifi space adventure universe that I started way back when I needed to keep myself sane at work.

I’m here to add as much original content as I can for quality.

[-] positiveWHAT@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hello. Was on Reddit for 10 years and been here six days now. I'm here mostly for science, news, fiction, games and finding new stuff. Got over the urge to look at Reddit already, but am taking this new poison. The fediverse with its different instances gives a feeling of smaller communities comming together which is both true and nice.

[-] randomaccess2112@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hey, there - I'm a recent Reddit refugee, mostly because of Huffman's approach to the mods and users during the API crisis, not exactly because of the apps themselves (never used them). That was only the culminating reason I left Reddit, however, as it was becoming a right-wing cesspool in many ways. Settled on this instance after lurking for a while (although midwest.social is pretty great as well) and I'm enjoying the vibe so far. Specialty is memes, pop culture, and music. Check out my new community here:

[-] Oh_FFS_NowWhat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Count me as another Reddit refugee! Happy to have found Lemmy and hope to support a growing and vibrant community. I'll likely be in lurker mode (we introverts are good at that) as I learn my way around. Thank you for the FAQ - very helpful! I don't have a boat but do have a couple of cats and dogs. I enjoy art, books, music, humor, nature and technology. And yes, I've been around since the days of dial-up (who can forget that sound, right?) Grateful to be here.

[-] ExploringLiterature@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hello Lemmy, I too am a reddit refugee and I'd like to introduce you all to my fists... of friendship! Yes friendship!

Kidding aside, hopefully I'll be able to make myself at home in the coming weeks, and I'm hoping for my subs back over at the Big R to come over here. Interested in music discovery, self-improvement, graphic design, games, books, Warhammer lore, memes, and basically any community that might tickly me fancy.

Glad to be here! Oh, and Mr. $ can go #*!@& his API.

EDIT: a letter.

Oh hey there. Reddit user of 9 years, migrating for obvious reasons. Just want to introduce my little community, if any of y'all enjoy playing old-school forum games:

!forum_games@lemmy.world

I'm really liking the friendly vibe here and hope it continues as the community grows!

[-] WhyTrashEarth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm WhyTrashEarth... I want to make people happy, improve our Earth, and explore Lemmy.World... I'm always here to help my friends so feel free to ask! I have lots of friends who use/used reddit, never really understood the appeal of it... However, I figured I'd try Lemmy out. I learned about this site because of MentalOutlaw from YouTube. Hello Lemmy World!

[-] malloc@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

👋 - Have mostly been lurking various lemmy instances (beehaw, lemmy.world, …) and finally decided on creating an account here! Looks like I will need to create multiple accounts though due to defederation on some instances. No biggie, lol.

Hope to contribute content here and keep lemmy alive and well even as Reddit management is threatening many subreddits to open back up.

[-] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I'm on here and Beehaw as well. I like both places! Plus it gives me twice as many places to waste time on.

[-] CaptObvious@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Well ok… I’m an old timer who’s been around the ‘net since the days of dialup, when FIDO and local BBSs were the Next Big Thing. I’ve always preferred to avoid corporate services, and the Late Unpleasantness on the alien site and the bird site have only made me more sure that’s the right stance.

Other than that, I’ve been a Trekkie forever. I love sci-fi, fantasy, and the paranormal. I enjoy a good ghost story, a smooth scotch, and a vintage fountain pen. Coffee is liquid gold. Everything else is subject to change without notice.
