Killing Varen: Operation Inferno

  • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. Zenith Boar Brush 31mm × 50mm
  • Razor: Weck Hair Shaper (green translucent scales)
  • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. Varen
  • Aftershave: Stirling Soap Co. Varen
  • Fragrance: Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse

I broke up the ring of death and flattened the soap for easier loading. This is progressing nicely.

In an unfortunate turn of events, in a brief lapse of self control, I ordered a replacement tub of Varen. Ugh. The entire point of this kill was to make space in the den, but no, I couldn't even stand the threat of a Varenless future. To make matters worse, I then completely fell off the wagon and also ordered tubs of Mountain Man, Braeburn, and Baudelaire. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

At least I had one more great Varen shave with the little Hair Shaper.

On a side note, the parallel killing of whiskeys continues with the death of this Royal Suntory:

How are you liking the Stirling x Zenith boar?

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 4 points 5 months ago

I really enjoy it!

It's not a surprise, though. I like the Moar Boar, and this is the same knot with a chonkier handle.

Here are some comparison shots: https://wetshaving.social/@djundjila/112067840903384444

I ended up going with the 28mm. I like it too, kinda wish it had a little higher of a loft, but nothing to lose sleep over. Stirling x Zenith++

It's like a Hydra only worse and more heads regrow before I even cut one off! 😱

Wonderful setup for the day! I killed a tub of Leviathan in 2022 and did not refill it because I had so many other soaps. Now, when a soap develops the first inking of a ring of death, I find myself using it less to prolong the enjoyment.

But let's talk about the important stuff!

Royal Suntory++;

Très cher in the US if you can find it.

This describes exactly how my whiskey collection accumulated almost empty bottles

Importé du japon;) It's also expensive here, but a good friend of mine used to live in Japan and mule bottles for me. Sadly he lives in Kyrgyzstan now, and the imports are less... exquisite.

This bottle was really nice, and it will be missed, but on to the next one.

New tubs of Varen are always encouraged. So far, of the soaps I've killed, Varen is the only one to get a refill.

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 5 months ago

Tabac is also getting a refill in my den, so I'm really failing at the whole killing for space thing 😄

I need to start killing stuff I don't like and that's gonna be trickier!

  • Prep: warm water
  • Razor: RazoRock Hawk V2; Wilkinson Hydro
  • Blade: KAI Captain Protouch MG; Wilkinson Hydro 3 cartridge
  • Brush: AP Shave Co. 30 mm Tuxedo Fan w/ black & clear handle
  • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts - Valley of Ashes
  • Post Shave: Thayer's Cucumber facial spray; Natura Siberica ASB gel

2 pass head shave. Hi again folks...

I'm not gonna lie, the last few days have been awful for me. I kinda fell back into depressive thought patterns due to private trouble atm and it was really hard. I also relapsed into smoking cigarettes; I am already trying to get back into vaping only and with my newest MTL device it should work.

Today I had the preparation day for my practical and oral exam tomorrow of my midterms to become an RN. This gave me some additional anxiety, but also new energy - I feel like I can be worth something again.

So today's shave was in order. I actually live VoA - smelling like death is currently fitting for my mood, but the newly acquired Protouch MG are really smooth. Just did an additional pass with the cartridge to look pristine tomorrow for my exam. Honestly, it feels great to have a slick bald dome again after neglecting my self-care for so many days and falling into a pit of despair. Now it's time to sleep so I can rock tomorrow 💪🏻

I managed to get a B in total. C for my practical work, A for my oral exam. What a stressful day, but I'm so glad that I achieved this under my current circumstances!

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 5 months ago

That's excellent! Nice work.

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 5 months ago

Thanks! Honestly, it means a lot to hear some kind words after feeling worthless. 🍀

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 5 months ago

Sorry to hear you're going through a rough patch!

Good luck with the exam tomorrow, you got this!

I also did that a few times in the past. Don't beat yourself up about the relapses. They happen, it's no big deal. If you keep at it, it'll end up sticking. It's been 15 years since my last relapse.

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 5 months ago

Thanks DJ. I have a lot to work on atm, but I hope to manage everything and find happiness again.

I actually did it! A 3 (C) for my practical exam and a 1 (A) for my oral exam for an end score of a 2 (B). Made some careless mistakes, but overall I did good. Now I know what to work on before the final exams next year and the same errors won't occur again.

Also thanks for sharing your story with me. I'm a bit disgruntled that I broke my over one year streak of no cancer sticks, but today shall be the final day that I smoked cigarettes. From now on it will be vaping only for me and I am committed to that health effort as much as I am to my career. I won't give up so easily again ☝🏻

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan
  • Razor: Ever-Ready Streamline Jewel Gen 2
  • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (1)
  • Lather: Noble Otter - Logbook - Soap
  • Post Shave: Aqua Velva - Musk - After Shave Cologne
  • Post Shave: Summer Break Soaps - Woodshop - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Geoffrey Beene - Grey Flannel - EdC

Just got this "Streamline" Jewel, and it's pretty incredible. These razors are the cream of the crop - built like tanks. This one is considered a Jewel based on the case that it comes in.

Congrats on the shiny new denizen! These are stunning and great!

  • Brush: Wald Nimbus Chryselephantine 29mm A1 Fan

  • Razor: Tanifuji Spalding 0411 6/8" Full Hollow

  • Lather: Zingari Man - The Master - Soap

  • Toner: Thayers - Rose - Toner

  • Aftershave: Zingari Man - The Master - Aftershave

  • Talc: Pinaud Clubman Finest Powder

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

The Master (as in Master Barber) has a spicy Shawn Maher scent paired with Heather's Sego base. It is intended as a barbershop scent, certainly, but I've not been to a barber shop here in the states that smelled this good. I paired this with the Pinaud talc which, in fact, does remind be of barbershops that I've been to in my youth (during the Paleolithic age).

For today's Theme Thursday, I'll cite Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers Band. I've attended a bunch of their concerts through the years and have been listening to a recording off of the mixing board of a concert at the Beacon Theater that I attended a couple of years before Gregg died.

"The Master", "Whipping Post" -- I jest. Just poking fun.

My fun "The Master" story is that I won a set from Heather when she hosted a wetshaving trivia live stream on Instagram. Catie's Bubbles came in first (I should probably know his first name), but naturally deferred the prize to second place, which was me. I liked how it smelled but it's not quite in my wheelhouse, and VisceralWatch had just happened to mention wanting to do a giveaway on his YouTube channel, so that set turned into that prize.

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 5 months ago

“The Master”, “Whipping Post”

Hah! I didn't put that together at all!

As for the scent, it is definitely in my wheelhouse. Not really as a barbershop scent as it is intended, but then, maybe barbershops in other parts of the world have that scent. Dunno.

I did wonder about VW's giveaway.
