tweet update:

Also - we’re not done with updating Bg3. There’s still a bunch of stuff coming like mod support and extra cinematics for some of the endings. Just not new content.

Good. Let this one marinate. The modding community has barely begun to show what's possible with this game. Over time, all this will only feed the appetite for similar quality, and hopefully make a dent in industry trends.

Please, someone lend them the KOTOR IP.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 28 points 8 months ago

What the hell is this? A corp not trying to squeeze every single penny they can get out of an IP? Damn commies hope their next game flops so bad they're back to living in their momma's basements.

I’m kind of alright with this.

BG3 is genuinely the best video game I’ve ever played and I’ve played like.. quite a few of them over 20+ years. A combination of lightning in a bottle and just genuine hard work.

At the same time, I think the story is very much over. They’ve tied a ribbon on it and I really feel like further “expansions” could only make it feel more murky.

As for BG4, this one took about two decades to come out, so I can’t really say how I’ll feel either way in 2050.

Kinda bittersweet. I just finished BG3. It’s so well done. The textures, maps, voice acting, music, sounds (that spell casting echo/reverb!), stories, details like books and the stories within, artwork…just every detail is so fucking good. My only complaint is that the console version is a bit buggy here and there, and sometimes downright breaks the game (anyone who has reached the Netherbrain on console knows).

I’m excited to see what’s next from Larian!

I'm ready to get flamed on this one:

I did not care for the voice acting.

Read: I'm not saying it was poorly done. The actors are wonderful and clearly skilled.

But every single person sounds like a Shakespeare theater actor.

Even characters that are supposed to be very rough, and/or uneducated have quite formal voices.

I personally found it immersion breaking.

Still an incredible game

its a bunch of english VOs doing their natural voices. if they adopted like a period-accurate cockney or something you'd be complaining about how they're impossible to understand. actual shakespear would also probably be difficult to parse

[–] cucumber_sandwich@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

I expected it to be much worse tbh. Some shifts, but quite regular in a way. I thought it would sound more unintelligible in a Scottish way.

  1. I'm not "complaining". I balanced my comment quite a bit.
  2. There are lots of other possible voices besides formal and cockney.
  3. I didn't say period Shakespeare, I said theater actors.
[–] underisk@lemmy.ml 4 points 8 months ago (1 children)

but it doesn't even sound like shakespear or theatre it sounds like natural, maybe slightly RP, modern english accent. and didn't say you are complaining, I suggested you would if they were talking in incomprehensible 'accurate' accents. even a period london accent would probably be tricky to grasp

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Like, there's dragon characters that have huge reptile mouths and they sound the same as wealthy city folk. There's druids and people who were raised in the wild and they all sound similar.

It just sounds like a theater troupe and less like very different creatures and backgrounds.

It's not a historical game or setting I'm not sure why you keep referencing any specific period.

[–] underisk@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

It's not historical but medieval fantasy settings generally tend to be based around medieval European tropes. I guess I just assumed your problem was with period accuracy because there are variations in the accents. Karlach has a working-class accent, Asterion is posh, Shadowheart is middle class? british.

It could be more overt, I suppose, or incorporate more than just british regional accents, but I feel like they made more of an effort than you're giving them credit for. I really disagree with any of it sounding like a theater troupe, though, save maybe Dame Aylin but that's in-line with her character.

I'd been waiting for a Game of the Year or Complete Edition before picking it up. Knowing there's no point makes me very happy, and just sold them a license.

I would have liked, at the very least, a “DM” mode like Divinity 2 had. Oh well. Maybe modders can hack one in.

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

To be fair, they said no dlc or expansion. Doesnt mean they wont add modes or free content updates :p

But ye, i could understand them. This is a game that took everything they had to give. I too would want to do something else after 4-5j hehe.

I also think that if perfect mod support was added ( which is on the way ), the mod community will have you covered :)

The article really makes it seem like it's Larian's choice. Which seems odd to my capitalism-poisoned brain. I'd have thought maybe Hasbro was shooting themselves in the dick again and choosing to not let them make a sequel. Well I hope they find their next passion project soon. Eagerly awaiting what will come next.

[–] CopernicusQwark@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

I think it's the case that the "easy to work with" people at WotC got fired and Larian realised that they wouldn't have carte blanche on future projects like they did for BG3.

[–] symthetics@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (2 children)

My money is on Neverwinter 3

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.de 5 points 8 months ago

Be still my aching heart. But hey while we are dreaming: I heard they will also release a tool that automatically transforms NW1 and NW2 modules to NW3!! :D

[–] swab148@startrek.website 3 points 8 months ago

Maybe Icewind Dale?

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 6 points 8 months ago

I'm okay with this. I liked BG3 but I really intensely dislike D&D as a rules system.
