You can skip some filler episodes.

[–] MeatsOfRage@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

The early episodes are mostly lipsync Pokemon

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 84 points 8 months ago (4 children)

I barely know who he is. A popular, rich influencer. That’s the beginning and end of my knowledge.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 57 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (3 children)

he got famous by giving away money, now he's giving away money with extra steps (those steps being various degrees of having to "earn it" through challenges) so he's basically became a game show host

[–] drcobaltjedi@programming.dev 40 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I remember someone awhile ago described him as a rich guy giving away life changing amounts of money so long as the pesents dance for him.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago (1 children)

tbh despite how accurate this description it i understand why he does that. To give away money you need to have money, and he makes his money by creating videos on YouTube, a video where someone does a challenge and earns a million dollars is going to be much more popular than a video of him just walking around and giving people money (again)

[–] Synnr@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yup. It's like an actor getting typecast as a tough guy who always kicks ass and never gets his ass kicked, makes tons of money from it, and then everyone complaining about him only ever playing a tough guy.

I'm sure a few names come to mind. But they're rich and stuck in that role because most people subconsciously agreed they should be rich and stuck in that role (by liking those movies and going to see them).

[–] ericbomb@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

I mean I just think of him as zoomer game show host. So that's a bit harsh.

Most of his challenges either are straight rips or would feel right at home in survivor/fear factor, then some challenges are just big brother straight up.

But I suppose you can say the same thing about all game shows that have normal folks on it competing for life changing amounts of money.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago

I didn't realize it before your comment. You are totally right. It's effectively a game show now.

[–] mcmoor@bookwormstory.social 6 points 7 months ago

That's a much better description than some other cynical comments.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 30 points 8 months ago

Same. I somehow sidestepped that entire region of YouTube.

[–] ericbomb@lemmy.world 24 points 8 months ago

He's zoomer game show host.

All you really need to know.

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 12 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I saw some videos that criticized him. AMA

[–] Gork@lemm.ee 21 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Is he actually a literal beast?

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 16 points 8 months ago

It's literally in the name

[–] FiniteBanjo@lemmy.today 62 points 7 months ago (2 children)

If you leave autoplay on it will probably be the very next video.

[–] cordlesslamp@lemmy.today 27 points 7 months ago (1 children)

If I got a completely new account, watch the first video showed up on the home page and leave the Autoplay on, isn't that just the algorithm jerking itself off?

[–] FiniteBanjo@lemmy.today 10 points 7 months ago (2 children)

No different from how it normally works, imo. The YT algorithm is shit and it only suggests the same content over and over, sometimes figuratively as it shares content which approximates successful content or sometimes literally because it will just share the same stuff on repeat.

If you disable all watch history for your account they will simply refuse to recommend anything on the home page, so you'll have to use the search bar and maybe start with the first video ever published like OP did with the elephants and the YT founder.

[–] cordlesslamp@lemmy.today 12 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Funny you mentioned that. YT took away my homepage in order to force me turn on watch history. Instead I changed my habit and only watch stuffs on my Subscription tab. My daily YT time decreased from 4-6 hours a day (I know, I'm kinda addicted), down to just 40-60 minutes a day.

And you guess what, in less than a month, my YT homepage magically returned 😂😂😂 I didn't do anything, it just reappear one day. But it kinda too late, I'm already picked up a new hobby and my YT time keep decreasing.

Too bad I'm just a fluke in the statistics, and wouldn't matter whatsoever. A lot of people cave in and turn on watch history.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 months ago

Wow - super interesting.

Wonder if you were straight A/B tested but definitely assume your behavior influenced their attempt to claw your free time back.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 7 months ago

That is so annoying, how YT’s algorithm just wants to show you the same thing.

Being Google and all, I would expect them to have a sophisticated algorithm that learns your daily patterns and gets really good at what kind of content you want to watch next. But no, it’s “yo dawg I saw you watched a car video so I queued up car videos to play after your other car videos!”

It’s not a mystery why, though. I assume their algorithm is much better at keeping people watching anything for as long as possible, rather than delivering the best product.

[–] lefixxx@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

Literally what happens to Ludwig

[–] Iluay@programming.dev 41 points 8 months ago

Well, I didn't have to look far on my end.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 31 points 7 months ago (1 children)

When is the best place to start I don't want to miss any significant arcs

[–] at_an_angle@lemmy.one 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

January of 2006. It takes a while to get going, but 2012-16 is a wild ride.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 2 points 7 months ago

Still quicker than starting one piece

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 24 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You are the kind of guy who watches Doctor Who and starts with An Unearthly Child

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 20 points 8 months ago (3 children)

No better place to start, though you might miss some plot points thanks to the episodes BBC taped over.

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 6 points 8 months ago

I also started there in parallel to watching the new stuff and the First Doctor isn't that enjoyable. The second is cool but the episodes aren't, the third has good stories he himself isn't that cool, the fourth is perfection and that's how far I got.

You understand many things better when watching the old stuff and you see the series grow which is quite cool.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

ehh, as someone with adhd i didn't get far into old who. I understand the constraints of the era and the budget but without something to stimulate my brain (like sound design, music, various camera shots, eccentric acting) i'd just rather read a book about it so i can imagine those myself

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It was a fire and the missing episodes have been recovered from private collections

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

My bad, been a while since I read about it and must've gotten confused between BBC and all the times American companies taped over old shows. (Including the goddamn moon landing, good job, NASA/

I knew some had been recovered over the years but we're all of them found?

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 21 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] BaldManGoomba@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

I watched Ludwig's video too

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 20 points 8 months ago (2 children)

JESUS CHRIST THAT VID IS ALMOST OLD ENOUGH TO VOTE!

[–] Spiralvortexisalie@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

The screenshot is old, there are YouTube videos old enough to vote now, Source Video Dated Apr 23, 2005

[–] Bananable@feddit.nl 7 points 8 months ago

In Scotland it already can.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 16 points 7 months ago
