What's the most recent JRPG you played that really amazed you? Something that would end up in your top 10, or otherwise blew you away.

Weirdly enough, Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon. I'd dipped in to the Yakuza series here and there, but never had one grab me. LAD played with some classic JRPG mechanics (specifically inspired by the Dragon Quest style games the protagonist would have played in his youths), and combined that with a mature protagonist (in his early 40s at the start of the game) who still managed to radiate the relentlessly positive himbo energy that was refreshing and fun.

Of course, the story itself is bonkers and fun in a way that the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series has always been. I went in not expecting much, and found it to be the most refreshing game I'd played in years.

Sea of Stars, despite being Quebecoise

I didn't want to enjoy it as much as I did.

Final Fantasy VII. Not the remake.

Persona 5 Royal. I never played any Persona games before. It took me quite some time to get into it, especially the time management aspect. But at some point it clicked and I could not stop playing. The ending actually brought tears to my eyes.

This one's mine too. I had played the vanilla version a couple years after release. I always love Persona, but I loved how well integrated the new content was, along with the writing for the new character. The ending (what I considered one of the weakest moments of vanilla P5) was such a huge improvement, too.

If it counts as a jrpg, Xenoblades Chronicle 3 was fantastic.

If course it count as jrpg, i read this so much, i maybe have to start a discussion about that, but i don't think much people would doubt Xenoblade Chronicle games are jrpg's.

Newest release: Octopath Traveler 2. I'm not even half way through it yet, but it's incredible.

Last one I actually played: Final Fantasy 6. The reason I haven't finished OT2 is because it just made me want to see the story for FF6 again lol

Have you played both octopath Traveler games? If yes, is the second better for you than the first one and why?

I used to replay FF6 once every year or so. Not only do I love that story, the way it's told is so great.

Trails in the Sky SC.

The first game ended on a cliffhanger so I wanted to get started on this one quickly. It improved a lot on the first one and ended on a satisfying note.

These games are part of a larger series which I’m looking forward to playing. I do realize these are older games but enjoying them immensely.

I didn't get really into the series until Sky 3rd myself, but yes, despite the old engine and even older art style, the Crossbell games were some of my favorite RPG experiences ever.

One Way Heroics+

the premise is simple but the music, story, and gameplay is great!

Shin Megami Tensei 5. It's got a weak story, yes, but it is also one of the few JRPGs with gameplay so good I'd still play it for over 60h with the story completely removed.

Also, if you're interested, there will be another version relased on all major platforms with more story added among other things, judging from the trailer at least.

Octopath Traveler 2

For one not already listed here, I'd have to go back to Trails to Azure. It has one of my favorite characters ever (Rixia Mao) and a really delightful combination of story and gameplay.

That's kind of hard to answer for me. I wrote down my top 10, so Fire Emblem Enage would really land in there, in my top 10 JRPG's, but not in my top 10 games. But i'm think i'm a to big fan of the franchise, so the next game is a boring as Fire Emblem, it's Fire Fantasy VII Remake. If you ask me bevor i played that some Falcom games would be for sure the choosen one, but you ask now.
