Now that Epic Games has cut off Mac/Linux support for Rocket League, what are my options to get it back? Do I need to use Lutris now somehow, or can I just use a specific compatability layer in Steam?

Pissed at Epic for doing this, I thought support for SteamOS was supposed to be easy for devs using Proton?

Edit: Heroic Launcher was the solution, and very easy. Thanks to all!! Edit 2: Heroic Launcher version was being weird with a controller so switching RL on Steam to Proton Experimental also worked.

Heroic launcher should do the job

[–] burndown@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

I will try! For some reason it doesn't want to show RL in my library but I'll keep at it

If you already own the game on Steam just use Proton. It ran perfectly fine for me through various proton versions over the years (whatever was the latest at the times I played) or proton expiremental. Before they dropped native support I would typically run the game through Proton anyways as it performed much better than the native Linux version at the time.

Otherwise using Heroic game launcher should be fine. Prior to Heroic getting popular I saw that people were installing Epic Games Store via Lutris and that ran Rocket League fine too.

Nice that it supposedly still works, scummy move nonetheless. I stopped playing Rocket League back when Epic had bought it and started requiring an Epic Account to play.

I've bought a game on Steam one day and then the new publisher decided that I can't play it just with the account I used when I bought it. Doesn't seem right to me.

I'm so glad I never gave to Epic Games my money.

They still make the engine many of the games you play run on so they still get your money. To be fair unreal engine is pretty good.

I've seen people profiting massive amounts of money selling Rocket League keys for Steam since Epic bought it. I guess they made a good biz.

I've never played Rocket League, but I have it, I'll try installing it and see if I can figure it out. Generally if you're looking for help running games on Linux then ProtonDB or Lutris.net will usually have some useful information.

Best of luck, let me know! I'll update this thread if I find anything.

@burndown okay so I installed it using Heroic Games Launcher and used Proton-GE-latest as the proton version. No other tweaks necessary. You can use Heroic Games Launcher to add your Epic Games games to Steam so you can launch it directly from the Steam Deck Library.

Oh wow i hadnt heard of Heroic Games Launcher before this is amazing! If this allows Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition to work on mac os again that will be amazing

I quit that piece of shit when it left steam. Proton should still work unless they have anticheat now or something.

[–] deanne@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

heroic games launcher works just fine

[–] vpzom@dev.narwhal.city 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Works fine in Proton, not sure what you have to do if you don't have the game on Steam

[–] burndown@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

It's free on the Epic Games store, so if you use Heroic Launcher you can run it!

[–] Rando@artemis.camp 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you install/use heroic launcher? That would be the easiest way I believe.
