Knowing Netflix? One more season, a cliffhanger ending, and bitter recrimination.

Truly the Google of streaming services

[–] MrNobody@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

So, Netflix is no different from any other tv production company that's ever existed then?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 21 points 10 months ago

bottom line is that Prodigy Season 1 will now air on Netflix and Season 2 will hit in 2024.

[–] kingaloo@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

Ahh. Netflix trying to "revive" a show. I bet Netflix will axe this like most of its shows.

It was nice to see the author of the piece dive in to the fact that the various Paramount subsidiaries don't always share the same goals or agree with the decisions of the others.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 9 points 10 months ago (12 children)

Is it even worth watching as a trekki? 🤔

It's great for what it is, but it's fundamentally a kids show. It's nicely animated, well acted and a lot more palatable to an adult audience than most but it doesn't scratch that Trek itch for me beyond using the IP. It's very much an action adventure cartoon. If that should good to you, then yeah go for it!

If it doesn't, you still might want to make an exception if you're really invested in Voyager. Characters from it aren't just cameos, so you'll get a lot more out of it if you'd really love to see Janeway again.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago

Oh, that's what i feared. Hmm, yes i do love voyager, and it might be nice indeed. Thanks man!

[–] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 19 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's a slow burn introduction to Trek. The show starts off having not much to do with Trek, as the crew itself has nothing to do with the Federation or Starfleet, but they go through a process of learning what Starfleet is, and they try their best to aspire to its ideals so they might be accepted to the academy when they reach the Federation. Ideas (e.g., prime directive, augments, temporal directives) are introduced one at a time with explanations. It's not meant to "just" be a kids' show, it's meant to be a kids' introduction to Trek. And as a fan of Trek, I think also a good introduction for a non-fan who might feel lost by how vast the Trek universe is. It's not about politics or diplomacy, but it carries the same spirit of unity, optimism, and the hope for the best of humanity that underlies Trek.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago

Very well put. That spirit is what i want from my treks. So yes, will watch it 😌 Thanks man!

Yes, Its got a great theme song, Janeway, exploration, foundations of a great crew and a tough little ship.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago

Janeway is a good argument indeed... Themesong less so, my emby skips intros 😁

[–] goldfishmotorcycle@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

“Little”?!

Short and precise 😁 thanks.

Yeah i could make an entire post on why and what and blablabla but its worth watching, little getting used to in the beginning (as all new shows) but after a few you forget its animated and its really good (i didnt expect it to be but is) think of it as Star Treks, The Bad Batch.

[–] firewyre@techhub.social 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

@Dyskolos @ValueSubtracted it's truly disappointing how often I see this question. I cannot give it a strong enough recommendation, our family LOVED it and my kids (and the rest of us!) can't wait to watch season 2 ❤️

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Oh the majority here seems to like it, so i will give it a go. I just thought it was (from the presentation) very kid-targeted.

[–] firewyre@techhub.social 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

@Dyskolos they definitely went that way out of the gate with the marketing, partnership with Nickelodeon, etc. But I guess I expected more of the fandom to watch it regardless, purely because it was new Trek. Doesn't seem like it turned out that way though.

There's a Kobayashi Maru-inspired episode that's an absolute treat, but I won't give any more away than that :)

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 10 months ago

Hehe, I'm already sold and will give it a go 😊

[–] wigbert@mastodon.world 5 points 10 months ago (2 children)

@Dyskolos @ValueSubtracted

somehow, any trek has its own merits - even the worst movies ( #TheFinalFrontier ) or stupid episodes with Jonathan Archer … 🖖🏽

[–] june@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

I really enjoyed it.

[–] andthenthreemore@startrek.website 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Second best new trek after SNW. Very very much yes.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 10 months ago

Okokok, you all got me convinced already ,-)

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 3 points 10 months ago

That's entirely up to you.

[–] unwantedpamphlet@mastodon.social 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

@Dyskolos @ValueSubtracted I tried 3 times to get into it and I couldn’t. Today I forced it and it was at the end of episode 9 when I said “ok, this is a good show.” That much work just to start liking a show isn’t for everyone but after finishing the first season I think it’s worth it. I think the second is set up to be really good and I’m excited for it. I didn’t like lower decks or enterprise at first either.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 10 months ago

You made it sound very tempting. But all the other guys already sold me on giving it a chance :-) And me too. didn't like lower decks or enterprise at first neither. But they both grew on me and totally earned their place in my trekkie-heart.

[–] giggling_engine@lemmy.world -4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I thought it was the least Star Trek Star Trek out of all of them, and I include Discovery in this list...

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Did you watch more than a handful of episodes?

Most long time fans who’ve seen the entire first season describe it as the most ‘Trek’ of the new eras of shows.

It starts out intentionally in a location outside the Federation that is tonally more like SW, and with characters that either don’t know or are hostile to the Federation. It meets new viewers where they are and then brings them into the fold.

By the middle of the first season it’s celebrating everything that’s great about the franchise.

[–] giggling_engine@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I watched like half the season before I couldn't anymore. It was more Star Wars than Star Trek.

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Uhm, would that be 5/10 episodes of the first half of season one (which has two x 10 episodes)?

Most fans view S1E6 ‘Kobayashi’ as the episode where the balance flips to be more Star Trek as it pulls new viewers in.

[–] giggling_engine@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Ok I'm willing to give it another try. But the whole thing just looked like a children's show....

[–] andthenthreemore@startrek.website 3 points 10 months ago

It's one of those good children's shows that's been written with the understanding that parents will watch with their kids.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip -1 points 10 months ago

Worse than discovery? Ouch...

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 10 months ago
