So im a crane technician, glorified diesel mechanic in Australia.

And i have flown arouns the country to get to a shitty little place called whyalla. Took me 4 flights to get here darwin to alice, alice to Melbourne, Melbourne to Adelaide. Missed my connection. Then the next day Adelaide to whyalla.

I have no idea whays the cause of the fault on the crane and currently no real idea on my next steps. But its 2000 and im in some shit restaurant at my accommodation and ive been here half an hour trying to get a feed so i can go to bed and do another 13 houra tomorrow. Because i want to go home Monday.

[–] Bluebanrigh@aussie.zone 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Looks like a chicken parmi.

[–] StorminNorman@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (2 children)

You couldn't be more wrong. That's a chicken parma.

[–] Bluebanrigh@aussie.zone 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Whatever it is, it's definitely not a chicken parmo.

[–] TheGreenGolem@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Eh, it's easily confused with chicken parme.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 1 points 11 months ago

Definitely a parmy

[–] OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

No idea what that is, but it sure looks like I want it in my mouth.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 11 months ago

Chicken parmy with a jalpeno and pepparoni topper

[–] wgbirne@feddit.de 23 points 11 months ago (1 children)

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 21 points 11 months ago

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

At least you got internet and an ungodly amount of saturated fats by the looks of it 😳

I wish you and the crane all the best.

[–] PlantJam@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

It's okay, the three cherry tomatoes on the side should make up for it.

The hell is your flight itinerary? Are there no direct flights from Darwin to Adelaide?

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 17 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah but not that day presumably because it was booked last minute

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

Fair call. Hope your flight back is more direct mate.

[–] TWeaK@lemm.ee 9 points 11 months ago

Aw man, sounds like you're working yourself too hard. I think you should accept that the job can't be completed by Monday, stretch it out and try to enjoy yourself. You might be in the arse end of nowhere, but other people manage to keep themselves entertained out there.

That being said, if you're getting paid overtime rates (particularly weekend overtime) then crack on!

[–] Zane@aussie.zone 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why on earth wouldn't the boss send you direct to Adelaide? Just about would have been quicker to drive.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah would have been, cause we booked it last minute there was no flights available.

[–] Zane@aussie.zone 6 points 11 months ago

Fingers crossed for parts on hand

[–] ohlaph@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

Lol I did not expect to see fucking Whyalla on here. Do a beachey! (They literally drive to the beach and back home LOL).

I always recommend connected airline when going through Alice/Whyalla because a fuck load of flights have been removed (rex?) and the Alice run was one of the typical ones Qantas allegedly was selling tickets for when no flight existed (and they'd swap you onto another one).

[–] whaleross@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

That sounds very exotic and different from anything or anywhere I've experienced. Mind sharing some pictures of the place and the surroundings?

There is a piss funny podcast, that warns about what not to do on a flight, check it out

Forza! You can do it!

Whyalla is home to the famous cuttlefish migration that takes place every winter: https://divedb.net/sites/whyalla-cuttlefish. Thousands of these cepholapods congregate on the shores to mate and lay eggs, with some crazy mating rituals. A lot of the males like to show off their camouflage by displaying a wave pattern through their camouflage. Mostly it's bigger males that get mates. However: there are little twink cuttlefish that pretend to be female to get close to a mating pair and sneak in!

For that reason I personally wouldn't consider it a "shitty little place", but haven't been there in a work capacity.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

My grandfather lived in Whyalla, so my parents took me over to see when I was nine. I remember kicking dust around at the base of his backyard gum tree because there was nothing else to do. :)

Apt username for someone that's looking upon his work and despairing.
