The original with Crowder implied his mind couldn't be changed because Crowder is a fucking idiot who refuses to listen to anyone but himself.

This one implies a willingness to listen and learn. Calvin was impulsive sure, but there were plenty of times he regretted his actions and wanted to learn from his mistakes. He is just an innocent child, after all.

The original one said something like "Thanksgiving isn't racist, change my mind," which is like... Not a thing that anybody says. The way Thanksgiving is taught to American kids is racist and full of revisionist history, but not even the ideal reddit caricature of an SJW would go around telling everyone that eating a turkey and mashed potatoes makes you racist. It was like inviting people to dEbAtE him on an issue that people aren't really even trying to make, so he'd get to sit there like a smug asshole without having to do anything.

Edit: I remembered the wrong slogan, the original sign said something else. The Thanksgiving bit was from a video he did, iirc the title used the same "change my mind" naming convention.

[–] squaresinger@feddit.de 12 points 2 years ago

Yeah, strawmanning usually tends to foster real, honest debates...

[–] explodicle@local106.com 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Damn I guess I misremembered. The Thanksgiving thing is a video he did, and despite it being like 90 minutes long I've gotten it as an ad on other videos. Haven't watched the fuckin thing and I don't plan to. Idk why I thought the sign had that slogan, but I feel like the video title used the same "change my mind" thing.

so happy not to see this shitbag on All every single goddamn day

[–] Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml 59 points 2 years ago (1 children)

*crowder, not Calvin. Calvin is a legend.

[–] pancakes@sh.itjust.works 27 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Calvin is a legend everywhere except as that sticker of him peeing that every douchey truck owner has on the back of their truck.

[–] Beelzebubba@lemm.ee 18 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (3 children)

That isn't Calvin. Somebody modified a picture of Calvin filling a water baloon and created the meme. Calvin's creator never signed off on it and actually refused to merchandise any of his characters. Peeing calvin is a travesty

[–] PipedLinkBot@feddit.rocks 5 points 2 years ago

Here is an alternative Piped link(s): https://piped.video/fPahl9phavA

Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.

I'm open-source, check me out at GitHub.

It's still Calvin. Theft doesn't make it not the original character. Also, those things are lame as fuck.

Meanwhile, I stole a Stupendous Man drawing and got it tattooed on my arm because I love the strip. It's an homage, not a stupid rant.

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 years ago

my life is a lie

[–] Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 years ago

That isn't Calvin. It's Turk McSmallcock.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago

Right? I'm using this version of the meme from now on.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 35 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I'm here after legging it the heck away from Reddit, and this is the post that makes me think I'm gonna like it here.

[–] sic_1@feddit.de 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You will. It's like Reddit 10 years ago here. Never looking back.

[–] Dubious_Fart@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

well, for at least a few years at least.

[–] heimchen@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What made you change your opinion now?(to reddit)

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Reddit hitting me with a permaban for an arbitrary reason was a strong factor. I was getting tired of how toxic the site was anyway, so, eh we're good.

[–] treefrog@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

the content has gone to shit anyway. i still scroll there some to keep up with news and generally don't find much news and way to many amiugly posts on the front page.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

All I was getting on Reddit were toxic Star Wars fans who would shit on me for either liking something they didn't or disliking something they liked, as if Fandom was a rigid set of instructions that compelled you only to like the things the Zeitgeist approved of... and all the "Reddit Atheists"

Now I have nothing against atheists, the existence of God is far more open to debate than something like the shape of the Earth.

However, Reddit Atheists are a different breed. I'm talking about the people who have unironically created a religion out of bashing religion. The "I pray to science every day! Hear the good word of Sam Harris! Lock up people who pray in insane asylums!" type. The kind who say Sky Daddy so often that those two words together make you sick.

Again, nothing against Atheists (My opinions on the validity of the supernatural are rather inconsistent, so let's say I'm Agnostic at best.), but every group, let me repeat, EVERY GROUP has its nutters who take it to absurd extremes you never before thought possible. Reddit had a lot this specific kind of crazy.

[–] treefrog@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Sam Harris has a real hardon for bashing religion which is sad considering how much Buddhism he practices (and how much his close mind and anger towards religion corrupts his practice).

Meditation is just mental masterbation and ego parlor tricks without the Dharma (the deep ocean of love and understanding we all swim in, what more enlightened Christians call God.) So much for "Waking Up".

Which is my way of saying, militant atheists are children making a religion out of bashing people with points of view they don't like (kinda reminds me of bible beating Christians and I'm sure they would loathe the comparison). And I too find them annoying as fuck.

On Reddit they got so toxic and insulting that I tried to report them for harassment, apparently being called a "Christofascist" (when you're not even a Christian to begin with) doesn't count...

[–] treefrog@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Crazy. Most subs have strict rules against name calling. I guess it doesn't count when they're using language the mods approve of.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's what eventually got me banned, they reported me for "Report Abuse" and Reddit just didn't wanna answer my appeal, happy accident because Lemmy's a much better community.

[–] treefrog@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

For sure! Glad you made it over :)

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Although I did see a meme using the rapist Vince McMahon posted the other day which is gross.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Voice McMahon? Who is that, did you mean Vince McMahon? I didn't know he was a rapist.

[–] BB69@lemmy.world 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Tbh I didn’t know who it was

Yeah, I know I'd seen the original meme format around for years before I ever actually learned who Steven Crowder was lol. I imagine most people who post the memes don't know either, or at the very least they're not trying to promote him or anything, but it gets a little hard to unsee once you become aware of it.

[–] CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 years ago

But Calvin sure does.

[–] Nyla_Smokeyface@beehaw.org 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wait that meme format was Crowder?!

Sadly yeah. Even in most of the edits you can still see his logo on the mug.

[–] manitcor@lemmy.intai.tech 16 points 2 years ago

1 lemonade pls

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The worst part is that people don't even use the format right. They just put correct opinions on it, completely disregarding the context of the template

[–] Dwarvy@feddit.nl 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Can you explain the context of the template? I have no idea what the context is.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 3 points 2 years ago

It's just Crowder saying something dumb and looking smug, so the opinions people put on the sign should be dumb ones

[–] whenigrowup356@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago

Or a wife, as it turns out

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 years ago

My most beloved comic used to make a point about contemporary culture. So fitting.
