Honestly, we're already not that far off, aside from the brain computer interface.
We have many very good translation tools these days, and they work decently well. You can even use it to translate text in the real world via the camera
So... A babelfish?

So, this thing is only entering the external ear canal. Its not getting to the brain. Not only is the eardrum an airtight barrier that only works if its air tight, even if you made it past it theres a lot of organs and bone structure, it doesnt continue as a tunnel into the brain.
Uhhhh, this is the ultimate truth detector, yeah? I'm sure no one is using this thing for bad, only good.
I think when they say the scientists envision being able to convert full thoughts to text, that's more like people 100 years ago saying they envision us having flying cars today. were no where near either of those things. BCI's are mostly used for people with disabilities so they can convert a very simple brain signal like try to move arm into a very simple command like move wheelchair forward it's still currently extremely impossible to decipher more complex ideas like an inner monolog, it isn't handled by just turning off or on a single brain region the way movement is.
so I think you have nothing to worry about for this ultimate truth detector thing. not something that would be developed in our lifetime or even our grandkids lifetime imo

We have flying cars. They’re called helicopters.  Also another reason we don’t have “flying cars” is that if your engine breaks down you die.
Also, can you imagine the quality of drivers that are currently on the road, in the air? How do you control the traffic?
They've been doing the things you're talking about since the early 2000s, surely they've progressed more than that. I remember them saying that they can actually do the art you see in your head like 5 years ago.
I'm not trying to be pedantic cause I'd actually kinda love to be wrong here, do you think you could find your source for that art thing? I'd love to read more about it, my understanding was that progress in this field was slow compared to the scales we're talking about here

This reminds me of Nanonics in The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton
I would much rather having something like this than have a chunk of my skull removed like Musk is planning. I wonder how the performance would compare though, actual probes in the brain are going to be way more reliable than just picking up EMF or whatever this does.
