Aliens have the tech to fly light years and be undetectable electronically, but didn't learn after the first couple of craft that they need to work on the landing?

I mean, I guess from their side they send a craft and it just...never comes back?

Seems like after the first couple they come up with a telemetry system to send flight data back. It's hard to imagine that aliens did a speed run to get faster than light travel down and skipped the parts of technology to measure and understand flight characteristics.
