An interesting article that talks about the genre and culture from the perspective of 1993.

This is the cover story from the February 8, 1993 issue of Time magazine.

By 1993 the cyberpunk community was already divided in describing cyberpunk itself. I shouldn’t be surprised but I am.

Its an interesting piece with an outsider’s perspective. However the author seems to view it as a movement and even calls the collective a cult.

That last line in the article is pretty dumb. “In the future we will all be cyberpunks” That’s not how that works.

I think that's one of those details that the original journalists didn't pick up on, because they had a limited amount of time. If they'd been on any of the more active BBSes (or had net.access) and hung out for longer than, if I had to guess, a week doing research they might have picked up on it.

Or maybe their editors cut that part. Hard to say.
