Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

MODERATORS

So here we go again...

Please direct all comments and links regarding the actual VOTING to this thread.

Edit Confirmed, Mike Johnson is the next speaker after running the table of all present and voting Republicans, 220 to Hakeem Jeffries 209.

If you'd like to know more about Mike Johnson, here's a good link:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/25/who-is-mike-johnson-republican-2020-election

I'll leave this pinned for 24 hours so everyone can catch up, then take it down.

1st vote count is in:

Hakeem Jeffries - 212 (217 needed to win)
Jim Jordan - 200
Steve Scalise - 7
Kevin McCarthy - 6
"Others" - 7

Jordan could have only lost 4 votes, he lost 20.

2nd vote:

Jeffries - 212
Jordan - 199
Scalise - 7
McCarthy - 5
Zeldin - 3
"Others" - 7 (one each)

Edit 3rd vote is in, House in recess.

Jeffries - 210
Jordan - 194
Scalise - 8
McHenry - 6
Zeldin - 4
Donalds - 2
McCarthy - 2
"Others" - 3 (1 each)

Matt Gaetz has vowed to oppose expanding the powers for McHenry:

Will ~~Scalise~~ ~~Jordan~~ ~~Emmer~~ Johnson drop out so that the next, somehow even less popular, Republican can try?

Emmer is a 26 No during roll call vote. As a result, they're thinking of putting in Donald Trump.

If the moderate Republicans thought the death threats from voting against Jordan was bad...

It sounds like some people don't respond well to strong-arm tactics. Even if it works and he bullies his way to be Speaker, there may be lasting bad blood between members of the caucus. I hope so, at least.

The normal holdhouts are not holding out. They are going for johnson en-masse.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I'm betting they threatened anyone who didn't vote for him with being primaried and no funding.

All this stupid applauding for votes. They should just get in with it.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I think the applause was for when he crossed the threshhold into officially losing.

[–] revelrous@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

It's also when past speakers (and nominees) are voting for their candidate.

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Could all the republicans just drop out of the entire government since they obviously don't want to govern? They should just skip a few steps and (ghost) write their books ffs

Bunch of toddlers
