One thing I have noticed is that when a dem is in office it becomes much easier to tell who your comrades are.

I do think the trump era did move a lot of people left, but in the end we all saw how so many radlibs just went back to brunch once Biden was elected. If someone’s opposing a dem while that dem is in office, I think there’s a much greater chance that person is committed to some sort of leftism. With a republican president we just get liberals with radical aesthetic, like “the resistance.” Sort of dumb reason to be pro-dem but just something I’ve noticed lately.

It's so obvious too. Watching orgs evaporate overnight when Obama was elected and then again when Joe fuckin Biden won was super frustrating and enough to convince me that white "anarchists" are mostly full of shit unless they are in a committed org. Just adventure seeking radlibs

[–] NewLeaf@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Even "the resistance's" biggest accomplishment was a banner on a crane and an inflatable trump.

They really showed him!

Don't forget when they painted BLM on the streets

But there were so many pussy hats on parade! Even Saturday Night Live showed how upset that made Drumpf! ![liberalism](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/301c12fe-4eda-4a2b-ac71-c39c57d39c2d.png "emoji liberalism")

"harm reduction" and my friend wants to keep getting HRT which makes state-level dems materially different from republicans for her... for now.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is how they do it.

Step 1: Dislike those that identify as right wingers for the most petty reasons (such as @Civility@hexbear.net ) instead of politically significant differences. ![the-republican](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/5d4755c1-0a9a-47d4-a06d-afc9da67de89.png "emoji the-republican")

Step 2: Appropriate an identity that is ostensibly opposed to right wingers. ![liberalism](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/301c12fe-4eda-4a2b-ac71-c39c57d39c2d.png "emoji liberalism")

Step 3: Shit on actual left wingers constantly to try to shove them out of their own identity, which also protects the status quo. ![the-democrat](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/37845a57-1fd1-470c-b8fb-253b3ba8aa8c.png "emoji the-democrat")

social democracy is objectively the moderate wing of fascism

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago (3 children)

At this point the only electoralism I can support is specific candidates or maybe some kind of local movement

Entryism into the Democratic party on the national level was always a fools errand, the best you could ever hope to do would be take over the party at the state level in a red state where they're weak and even that's a long shot

[–] Autisticky@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hi! I don't know what it is, but some weird site thing happened and your username showed up at the top right part of my screen as if I had "logged in" to ur account before the page loaded more and my own username popped up. Technology!

I think the closest thing to a state Dem party doing anything approaching acceptable is seen in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Both state Dem parties boldly stood for trans rights without any reach-across-the-aisle bullshit. Meanwhile, strong blue states like Maryland were very reluctant to do anything on trans rights when the issue first came up, and national Dems are predictably not supportive of trans rights (especially with KOSA and Biden's rule to maintain Selective Services registration for trans women as if they're men).

He was just invading your account. Happens to everybody. Do not resist. ![xibe-check](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/d4bcadf4-8ce4-4794-9c92-77bd31c38131.png "emoji xibe-check")

“Harm reduction” only lasts for so long

American democrats in 2023 are the equivalent of 2004 Republicans

Their new strategy is promising progressive policies, getting into office, starting some horrific proxy war that the Republicans also would have done, paying PR companies to market it as progressive, then sacrificing all of their progressive policies in congress to continue the horrific proxy war because it's actually the most progressive policy ever and if you disagree you're a Russian bot.

It's almost like the west uses "human rights" only as a cynical pretext to justify their brutal capitalist regimes wanton murder across the globe.

[–] M500@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago (11 children)

What is the realistic alternative? At this point I’m just happy if the Republicans stop gaining power. Once they are not so crazy, then we can move further left.

[–] Tomboys_are_Cute@hexbear.net 48 points 1 year ago (19 children)

When was the last time the Dems got more left wing? Biden is the one pulling the shit in the meme and doomed American railroads by breaking that strike, Obama's admin is the reason slave markets could open in Libya, Clinton ratified NAFTA and did all that ![epstein](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/120f40d3-ae57-47b3-8d80-978bcdfbbfda.png "emoji epstein") stuff, this is not a conclusive list of any of their deeds.

How could you possibly drag that party left? They have resisted turning left at every turn largely in spite of their base and they keep getting elected. I personally don't think it could be done and the alternative is to either vote 3rd party or spoil your ballot when the time comes around.

What do you mean "once they are not so crazy?" Both parties have only been moving further right, and the Republicans have no reason to stop when they know that every time they push their side of the Overton window right, the Democrats will match them on their side to lock it in.

Dawg the Democrats have been, they are, and they will continue to finance and promote far-right Republican candidates as a campaign strategy.

They prefer to run against candidates like that in the general. There won't be an end by design

[–] SaniFlush@hexbear.net 37 points 1 year ago

The DNC is perfectly happy continuing to enforce whatever bullshit the GOP passes, they only wait for permission to enforce it. We’re only going to have an ethical government when it is built from the ground up to be ethical, free from our current constitution’s bias towards wealthy land owners such as the founding fathers who wrote it.

[–] YouKnowIt@hexbear.net 33 points 1 year ago

If they moved farther left then they would stop the Republicans so much easier. People like getting stuff for paying taxes, if they did even the most tepid soc-dem shit instead of whatever bullshit they're on, they'd rule unopposed for a century. How many times does someone like Nancy Pelosi have to say that they need a "strong Republican party" before you believe that will not help except by accident?

[–] Maoo@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago

Feel free to cast your individual vote for Dems if it makes you more comfortable. It doesn't really matter and there's usually no meaningful choice anyways.

But if you're spending any other time trying to support them, like joining the party or going to some protest that accomplishes nothing or trying to convince others to do so, I would recommend taking that energy and putting it into left organizing as part of a local leftist organization.

Our power as the working class is actually rooted in collective action, including labor actions to withhold labor, to disrupt capitalist structures of control, to shut down infrastructure, to demand attention for our causes. There are many more of us than there are in the ruling class (the class that controls the Democrats), but we fail to realize our power because we are disorganized and full of false consciousness about how the world operates. The reason the ruling class wants you to focus on bourgeois electoralism is that it is no threat to them. Being embedded in the work that is or becomes a threat is much more powerful. You'll find that you punch above your weight (in power) in a competent left organization, way more than any Democrat activity ever offered.

[–] coeliacmccarthy@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The realistic alternative is supporting organized labor, mutual aid, local candidacies and local issues that might actually accomplish something tangible. Picking up a gun if you have to. Vote for fun if you want but know that it's a ritual you perform in place of politics.

[–] newmou@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

Lmao it’s a marginal difference, so little that your energy is 1000x better spent worrying about and doing other things

[–] NewLeaf@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

What are the democrats better on? From where I'm standing, they're continuing trump era policies, and in some cases making things worse

Edit: they didn't respond to a single one of us 🤔
