Hello.

I have a post I made to a group on lemmy.world that doesn't seem to be federating.

The group is !aphantasia@lemmy.world. The post can be found here https://lemmy.nz/post/322993 and the same one here https://lemmy.world/post/108808?scrollToComments=true

I can see two comments from you on each post. Is that what you're referring to?

Also your account is marked as a bot account, did you want to check your user settings? There should be one setting to say it's a bot account and one to say you want to see posts from bot accounts.

I'm no longer a bot 🙂

When I check the post I've linked above it only has my two comments and a single reply in one thread.

Checking that same post directly on lemmy.world there are 29 comments across 8 threads.

Yeah probably because the post hadn't synced until recently. When that happens not all of the comments get pulled across

Yeah, looks like the post is a month old and when I checked earlier there was just one subscriber from lemmy.nz(I guess that's @Whitt@lemmy.nz).

Posts and comments from before the first subscriber are generally not federated (I'm not sure the circumstances where they are). Most likely those other comments will never come across.

Is there any way to force a full sync of community or even a single post?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Not that I'm aware of. Hopefully we get these tools with time. But as I understand it federation is basically a push action, the community host instance sends the updates out to all the instances with users subscribed. The instances don't send a request asking for updates as far as I know.

Ah dam. So basically, we are missing all content from before a user subscribes to a community on a different instance?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Something like that. I have heard basically that but if you go look at a new community that no one has subscribed to then it still shows you posts so there must be more to it.

I think it syncs a few recent posts, but not the comments when you first subscribe.

But I think there are other ways to get older posts synced?

Hopefully how this works becomes a bit more transparent and is improved over time. It's a bit confusing right now.

Yeah it's not very clear what's happening, and when people try to explain it I don't think it lines up with what we see. These things will get easier over time as new features are added.

I have another account that has it's home instance as lemmy.world, none of my comments are posting. I think the instance is really struggling at the moment.
