I love it. Here I am, a being. Living. Breathing. In a trippy dreamlike existence. Does materialism bring consciousness? Does consciousness create a world for itself? Nature all around me. Fascinating patterns in the micro and the macro. The beautiful sound of the ocean. The intrigue of the mountains. The solitude of the desert. The sun. The moon and the stars. Space. Friendship. Language. Community. Given all that, how amazing it is to work a shitty job for a shitty boss during this incredible experience of being alive in whatever the fuck all of this is. I’m ALIVE. Hear me roar, void. Hear me and see me, witness me use my limited time wisely writing nonsense reports, creating spreadsheets, and working unpaid overtime. Witness me cherish the wonder of the world by sitting in an office all day, returning home in stressful traffic, and having no time for friends and family. This is it. This is why we exist. I love it.

Can someone explain me how pensions work? Isn’t that some sort of 401k that is tied to the company and you lose access to when you switch companies?

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

It depends on the organization.

I'm part of the Texas Municipal Retirement System. I put 7% of my salary into TMRS, and th city double-matches that, so I've got 21% going into the pension annually.

When I retire, the pension pays me according to what I put in and what I make the last 5 years of my career. Each member city that I've worked at contributes to my pension until I doe according to how long I've worked there.

The biggest thing to understand about a pension versus a 401k is that you can't cash out on a pension. When I retire, I'll get paid the rest of my life and even get raises, but I won't have a huge pile of money I can pull out or give to my heirs.

On the flip side, I don't run the risk of outliving my savings.

I have a 2% pension. So, every year I work at this company, they add an additional 2%. When I retire, I will get paid that percentage of my salary for the rest of my life. It will be based on what my salary is at the time I retire. So, if I work there for ten years, for example, I’d continue getting paid 20% of whatever my final salary is after I retire.

a pension ensures trust between employee and employer.

I believe if you leave, you lose it.

if they fire you without an acceptable reason, they lose it.

the longer you work there the harder it is to fire you without it hitting the company.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 2 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Sounds like a raw deal. It’s nice to have severance package but the price is losing your pension if you leave… not worth it. Companies change, get shitty, and then you’d be stuck with it.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

and that's one of the handful of reasons why most people don't complain about them being gone.

on the other side, when your company gets shitty, get petty.

make them fire you for some dumbass reason. get the payout, and move on.

Yep there's so many ways to get someone to quit

[–] Yaarmehearty@lemmy.ml 8 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

As somebody who got made redundant last week and is facing the shit heap of a job market right now.

Yes, be thankful if you have a job.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

I noticed that was happening months ago luckily. I was going to quit but now....not so much.

I worked in planning, I won’t say for who as I can’t other than to new employers based on the package I got.

It’s a field very close to being replaced by AI, if it gets to a point where it understands employees propensity to work different patterns and times then it will just replace people.

Hence I’m looking to now change careers before that happens, but starting again after more than 15 years is harder than I thought and I thought it would be hard.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Hang in there. I know it's just stupid words on a screen, but I'm juuuust on the other side of a painful, painful fucking stretch. I thought it'd never end. I'm scared to even say it, but I think my new boss MIGHT actually care about her employees and view them as people? knock on wood

[–] Yaarmehearty@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 hours ago

Thanks, it’s good to hear from the other side, I hope it is as you say and it keeps working out for you.

I’m luck to have good people with me and some savings behind me so it’s just a case of keeping my head up and keeping on.

It's called "taking control over your life" and it has the cumbersome effect of giving the illusion that one has control over one's own life. A common phrase would be "If you just worked harder you wouldn't be so poor." There is solace in the power over one's own life, so much so that people ignore that this power is getting eroded day by day. Because admitting this is very scary, even moreso if one has people depending on them.

But why did he need to write it in cum on the wall?

Is that why all of his veins are popping out?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 14 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Was wondering if those were supposed to be veins or wtf they were.

[–] Karl@programming.dev 7 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Those are veinsss? I thought they are Bovine Tapeworms

It's the measles, it got his brain.

[–] don@lemm.ee 45 points 23 hours ago

If you’re not making billionaires become trillionaires, WHAT THE FUCK IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR WORTHLESS LIFE?¿

Get back to work.

Is that Mac from 1992 going to work until it is dead?

[–] amon@lemmy.world 21 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

IT budget went to CEO stock options

Oh I was going to say he paid a rich guy way too much $$$$ for a NOS (new old stock) vintage Mac!

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That appears to be a Macintosh 128K and I can confirm that the one my dad got in 1984 still functions. It's not really useful for much these days, but it does work, and you can play Math Blasters, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and it even has a monochrome paint program.

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

My dude pick a fucking lane

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 7 points 23 hours ago

Lol, like we're not gonna be replaced by AI. You're lucky to even have a job.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@lemm.ee 4 points 22 hours ago

I liked my original Mac too, but certainly missed the deluxe keyboard and two-button mouse. :S
