News and information from Europe ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

I had already posted this with a lemm.ee account, and moved here because lemmy.world is hosted in EU, but seems like the post got deleted along with the account. Iโ€™m sorry for the possible spam.

Proton is based in switzerland, but the ceo just kissed the ring, so do whatever you like

Let's break it down. Just because a solution is European, it doesn't automatically mean it's better or more trustworthy when it comes to your data and privacy. While some European solutions might be great, it's not a guarantee that they're all created equal or that they're more committed to protecting your information.

It's not like all European companies are die-hard advocates for privacy, fairness, and openness. Each one has its own approach and priorities, just like their North American counterparts. So, it's essential to do your research and evaluate each solution on its own merits, rather than making assumptions based on its geographical origin.

That being said, if you're looking for a temporary solution while you search for something you can really trust, a European option might be a good stopgap. It's not a permanent fix, but it can help you bridge the gap until you find a solution that truly aligns with your values and priorities. Just remember to keep looking and don't get too comfortable โ€“ your data and privacy are worth the extra effort to find the right fit.

Dammit, didn't know about that. Any source to see it?

On a sidenote, can we somehow link to lemmy threads so that everyone can access them from their home instance?

[โ€“] nutcase2690@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I think you can add https://lemmyverse.link/ before the shared url without http

https://lemmyverse.link/lemmy.world/post/24313503

is an example. I saw div0 using this, seems handy! Doesn't quite work with voyager, though unfortunately

Thank you. There goes my plan to move to Proton for mail, VPN and cloud storage, then ๐Ÿ˜”

It's missing lemmy and matrix, but at least they have mastodon listed.

[โ€“] Elrecoal19_0@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (4 children)

Yeah, at least they (supposedly) have a chat to propose stuff. I already proposed EU-hosted Lemmy instances. What is matrix, by the way? First time I heard of it.

[โ€“] Matombo@feddit.org 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

the fediverse chat protocol

started as a seperate project but is spiritually very aligned with the rest of the fediverse

  • federated/decentralized server network
  • seperation between protocol, server, and client application
  • free and open source

so it got "included" to the fediverse (not compatible with ActivityPub)

if you want to try it: https://element.io/ (or other clients: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/ )

[โ€“] Elrecoal19_0@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

so the way usernames are managed is @username:instance, so, if I'm in the matrix one, it would be @elrecoal19:matrix.org, and yet I can contact people on other instances like @friend:differentInstance, right?

[โ€“] Matombo@feddit.org 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

yes, that's exactly the idea

it works just like e-mail adresses but for chats

[โ€“] Elrecoal19_0@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

okay, thanks for explaining!

[โ€“] vollkorntomate@infosec.pub 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I already proposed some things to them in the past. They responded really quickly and added my suggestions right away. I just wrote them a private message on Mastodon: @european_alternatives@mastodon.social

[โ€“] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 1 points 18 hours ago

Good to hear

[โ€“] johannes@lemmy.jhjacobs.nl 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Its a chat protocol with encryption build in. Its like Discord and/or Whatsapp like.

[โ€“] Elrecoal19_0@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

That sounds nice, only bad thing is most people probably still don't use it.

[โ€“] Matombo@feddit.org 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Afaik they are the only ones currently who at least anonced that they want to implement the DMA (EU law) enforced WhatsApp chat interoperability: https://element.io/blog/the-eu-digital-markets-act-is-here/

So there is hope that at least in europe this could become an alternative.

[โ€“] Matombo@feddit.org 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

fun fact: some german institutions hosting unfederated servers (or only internaly federated servers) to use the matrix protocoll for internal communication: https://element.io/matrix-in-germany

[โ€“] albert180@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 hours ago

There is a reason for the missing federation outside.

At least the one for Health Services is limited to licensed Healthcare Professionals so you know for sure you only communicate with other licensed professionals, and also you know that the displayed name is the real one

[โ€“] johannes@lemmy.jhjacobs.nl 5 points 20 hours ago

Well, there are some great opensource software projects that are on the Matrix network. Look at matrix.org :) I host my own server for some friends, just like i host my own Lemmy etc.

[โ€“] illi@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago

Should be like an alternative to Discord. Don't really use it so can't judge how it holds up

[โ€“] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 9 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

linkdeponie@feddit.de

FYI: feddit.de ist dead, the big german-speaking instance is feddit.org now.

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Perhaps peertube should be in the list too? At least the European instances?

[โ€“] Elrecoal19_0@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Agree, here there is a list of peertube instances:

https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances

And a few of the ones with most users and videos are European, too (btw, the instance peertube.tv is hosted in Finland by the same people who host lemmy.world)

[โ€“] Sgarcnl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 22 hours ago

I suppose its worth a shot. Support the local is always a good thing when the other guys are sympathising

[โ€“] Rokin@lemm.ee 2 points 19 hours ago

I checked it out when you posted it before and I'm so glad the site exists. I would very much encourage everyone to use it and the services and products listed.
