For the average consumer it just isn't the same without being screwed by big companies.

I believe in viewing as much propaganda as possible, because it helps you better see and understand it. No country is acting in our self-interest as a species right now. It is interesting what different people are allowed to say/not say on different apps. (My goal for this year is to learn enough Turkish to get on the Turkish web and better understand the weird cult that doesn’t get along with Erdoğan - they run lots of charter schools in the US for some reason.)

The fediverse is nice, but is never going to be mainstream. It’s not designed to be addicting, because that isn’t its purpose. Maybe it is for the best to have these small holdouts where you can have something analogous to the early internet - where saying “suicide” or “kill” or talking about sensitive topics doesn’t mean your post will never be seen. These small spaces won’t be bought and destroyed.

Imagine the hacker news userbase getting drowned out by redditors and bots on a massive scale never seen before. Anybody coming back to the site will scoff at the idea of yet another board wasted by enshitification.

impractical, yes. But the point still stands.

The UX here needs to drastically improve for more people to see it as an viable alternative.

[–] penfore@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I use Sync for mobile app and Photon for a web interface. But I think most people are not okay with having to search for these options.

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Exactly that yes, it took me a while to find Photon, and I'm someone that's passionate about tech and works in tech.

Your average new user is going to give up long before that and never use the site again.

It's also confusing to pick which instance to start with (users need to be guided more)

[–] penfore@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

About the instance choice, I believe it's easier to get used to since people use e-mail and Mastodon is already quite popular.

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, the web UI looks clean enough for me. 🤷‍♂️

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 2 points 23 hours ago

For you yes, I'm also okay with it. Bit it's not great as smooth and nice as what the vast majority of people are used to

Linux propaganda 😎👉

[–] CurlyChopz@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I honestly don't think the fediverse will ever take off - and that's a good thing. If it was to get too mainstream, eventually it would need to be standardised and controllerd to accommodate the average person, which would defeat the point of the fediverse as a whole. Imagine if everyone started using Linux as their daily driver tomorrow; a lot would be fixed, but a lot of the original identity would be broken

We should form our own propaganda. Not as a counterpoint, but as part of a wider fediverse identity.

But to successfully do this without being grouped together with one of the more mainstream platforms, it will have to be one so far removed from established axis' of alignments:

  • Impossible to place on left vs right.
  • Impossible to compared with authoritarianism vs democracy
  • Cannot be tied to a specific geopolitical agenda
  • cannot align with a specific country's interests

How about this: "Sasquatch did 9/11 to distract us from the fact that Big Farming puts nutrients in our food, and the Dutch lgbtq communities are the only one who can save us"

Impossible to place on left vs right

Not possible unfortunately 😅

What you've come up with there would be considered "left wing" 😂

Ok, let's add some war hawking in there: A pro-colonialist stance in regards to invading Bouvet island.

From my time on Lemmy. There seems to be a lot of American propaganda on here from people.

[–] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I see a lot of Chinese propaganda as well

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And Russian and North Korea for some reason

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The amount of people here who will try to convince you that NK is some sort of paradise here is insane.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

NK is some sort of paradise

The bar for "paradise" is so low. Just living in a country where you don't have chronic homelessness, endless war, and rampant medical bankruptcy seems to qualify.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

North Korea has been in a war since it was created.

This is exactly the shit I was talking about.

[–] Ofiuco@lemmy.cafe 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sometimes I don't know if it's propaganda or some inferiority complex because I've seen some propaganda from my country (MX) and if I try to go against it I get downvoted constantly (a lot less since I joined an instance that blocked ml, grad and hex) by people adamant into telling me how they lived here for a while, they have family here or how I am ignorant about that country, like... Bitch, everyone in my family has lived here for 3 generations at least, don't come here to tell me how things work when I have to deal with the consequences of a kakistocracy that keeps shitting on everything.
A lot of the fediverse users just have to be right when it comes to politics... And vaping, don't you dare have questions or doubts about vaping because they get mad.

Dude. The Russian propaganda flows freely around here.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You don't have to interact with .ml instances, you know?

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you think it's contained within one instance then you are the exact type of mark they are after.

Dont worry, if you put propoganda of opposite polarity together they cancel eachother out. /s

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

No no no. Propaganda is inherently Russian.

does Fediverse have a short form video content platform? cuz that's what people really care about these days

(also side note, we all really should avoid or limit short form video content consumption...)

[–] biggerbogboy@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago

I believe Pixelfed Loops is the only one currently, it's actually not half bad, apart from how barebones and stuttery the app is, which isn't a big deal since the issues are only occasional.
