I don't think so. They're probably scapegoats for a cover up. His investigation into a construction company caused a government inquiry. He made some powerful enemies that wanted him gone.

If anything these relatives may have been aware his life was in danger previously (being asked by them to have the journalist stop his investigation) and by charging them, any testimony or prior knowledge of this is now void

I'd look at the group he was investigating first.

This would be like if the Boeing whistleblower was found murdered instead of suicide (he was killed but I'm making an example) but then multiple relatives were arrested first .... Wouldn't that be incredibly suspicious...?
