It's possible that they're untrue, but the rest of the family wouldn't know.

It's also worth pointing out that many people with mental health challenges as adults experienced sexual or other abuse as a child. So even if she does have mental health issues now, that doesn't mean that her claims are untrue.

the rest of the family wouldn’t know

They're not just saying they don't know of any abuse. They're saying she has a history of trying to extort relatives by threatening to make accusations of sexual abuse.

I get that. But it's also possible that that inspiration came from somewhere. We don't know one way or another.

The abuse might even be the reason for the mental illness.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 3 days ago

Exactly my point, yes.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 7 points 4 days ago

Or vice versa. People with mental illness often make for easy victims.

If anything both of those facts are supporting details imo.

A family quick to deny and not support their family member?

A history of clear mental anguish?

That's exactly the people this stuff has happened to

It's not uncommon for people to stay quiet about their abuse until adulthood. Also very unfortunately common for people especially family members of the accused to not believe them.

This whole affair stinks of mental illness with a sense of being cheated out of money.

And would someone please explain to me why this isn't a police matter if it involves rape allegations...

And would someone please explain to me why this isn't a police matter if it involves rape allegations...

They don't do anythinhg about it. Literally the clearance rate of rape cases is less than 20%. Your only recource to punish someone for the harm caused is civil court.

[–] Murvel@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So? Of course, you go to the police first regardless if it involves something as serious as rape...

What are you saying? That it's a bad idea to go to the police if you have been raped!?

Lemmy. I should have known better, lmao...

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Exactly how? The article gives almost zero information surrounding the allegations. They just immediately accused the woman of making up the allegations.

[–] Murvel@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah ok but it don't exactly speak well for her credibility if this isn't handled as a police matter...

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Statue of limitations likely doesn't allow for criminal charges anymore.

Lucky him he doesn't need to hire a team of lawyers; he can just use AI to help his defense.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

There's already video footage of it? https://youtu.be/l-mhPFEr-Bw

[–] lurklurk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

There are already plenty of reasons to dislike and boycott Altman, regardless of this matter.

The guy that's been raping the Internet for the last three or so years also raped a people? I'm shocked! SHOCKED!
