Yeah at my Christmas one of them sat down, turned to me, and said so what did you think of the election? Bastard.

Had an aunt tell me that a huge, huge, part of this election was the topic of liberals telling people they could no longer breastfeed they had to call it chest feed. They said it was a massive part of the election cycle. Where the fuck did that one come from?

I laid down a carpet-bombing that lasted a full two weeks onto Facebook, every horrible, terrible thing I could source, meme I could grab, and fact I could post, in a strategic, all out assault of leftist ideology.

The family got shook, I got sent a ton of messages, had a shit ton of fights, saw every one to the end and got to a point where every combatant got to the well, we can't talk about politics with you phase.

HALLELUJAH.wav

Thanksgiving? Nothing. Zero. Nada. No one said the word Trump once.

Christmas? Exactly the same. It's as if it happened in 2014. Not a single word of politics anywhere.

They knew I'd go off like a Roman fucking candle, no mercy, zero prisoners if so much as the word truffle was misspoken and I only heard the tru-.

You're their family member too, you know. They have every right to dread your mouth as yours does theirs. I say give them damn good reason.

I keep the peace for my mother's sake and the fact that I have no interest in any of the rest of the family. Otherwise, I'd consider lighting a fuse. Hell, if it wasn't important to my mother that, after long years of struggle, she gets to have a semi-normal family life, I'd not even bother going.

I was the leftist, and I instigated the trouble with this T-shirt, sorry not sorry:

Yeah…. I wasn’t quiet. Heh. Super trumper cousins left in tears that the “left” was destroying our Christian country as barraged them with the anti-Christian things they did daily. The rest of the family decided to drop the topic since there were “equal” sides to the arguments. Christmas was actually good, once the obnoxious ones left.

I will not be silenced

Hell yeah

I held my ground under a drunken barrage of old people’s useless anecdotes at my partner’s Christmas, when the go-to strategy was to ignore it. Everyone left the conversation happy so that’s progress lol.

Uncle with no personality, redeemable traits, or an actual understanding of how the government functions has extemely strong opinions on how the government functions. Any push-back from family members on said strong opinions will be conveniently disregarded as liberal brainwashing/fake news.

Ask if a mother is unable to feed her children if she should be provided with food assistance. It's kind of surprising how popular leftist policies are. Also if you are strong enough to do real time fact checking then good luck.

"Yes, by charities and the Church"

There won't even be hesitation.

I was the one getting too heated when my debunking of anti trans misinformation (“trans women have a clear inherent advantage in sports compared to cis women") was ignored and again when Umberto Eco's 14 common features of fascism were summarily dismissed in favor of an unspecified "expert" my brother had heard on a podcast saying that Trump and his cult aren't fascist 🤦

Really sucks that, no matter how right I am and how wrong anyone else is, all someone has to do in order to make me look like the unreasonable one is to refuse to listen until the futility and injustice of it all makes me raise my voice in exasperation 😮‍💨🤦

Three dudes wearing baseball caps around a card table with some Amazon Basics audio equipment always win.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 20 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

god damn, am I that (leftist) uncle?

[–] jeeva@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Was just thinking the same 😏😅😂

[–] JayTreeman@fedia.io 17 points 20 hours ago

I am too! I was once, as a 32 year old, relegated to the child table with another adult obnoxious relative. We were then asked multiple times to be quiet because we were too loud while laughing and joking. You're not alone comrade.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

I guess I've been lucky. Although the majority of my extended family is poorly educated, lives in rural areas, and has a certain set of toxic political views, my close by family is well educated and lives in urban areas.

I haven't had to share a holiday meal with one of the toxic people in probably decades.

I love correcting my dad, and grandpa when they give ahistorical retellings then we argue and I say they have no idea what they're talking about which makes them super mad. They can't do shit because I'm bigger and they can't argue because I know more.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Could I have made a scene? Oh, yes, especially when the talk turned to coal and how closing down coal mines would make West Virginia 'the poorest state in the country' and how 'Trump is already having an effect on the economy, you can see it in the gas prices'.

Would it have helped? Would I have gotten any satisfaction from it? No, and no.

I fucking hate family holidays.

Just wait until next year when no one can afford any Christmas presents, half the family has been killed by bird flu, and there is no food because we have no migrant workers to pick crops. No more family holidays.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 20 hours ago

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago

They'll be praising the circumstances to high heaven, don't you worry.

Last time I saw my extended family I had that look on my face as my trump supporter uncle was using the N word
