Glad to see this film getting the recognition it deserves. I never understood why it flopped. Really good, fun, competent sci-fi.

It was too complicated for a lot of moviegoers.

That's kind of sad. Its the standard time loop trope that's really common.

There are lots of threads on Reddit, IMDb, and elsewhere of people asking for an explanation to the ending.

[–] thrawn@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Aight I haven’t seen those threads but I’m guessing it’s about how he resets to a day or two before he was given the power by the alpha?

That’s a very fair thing to wonder. I wouldn’t expect the power to work if the omega was dead. I assumed plot convenience but maybe others were more curious.

Only reason why I like this movie. Tom Cruise dies a lot.... Like a lot. Like a crazy amount of over and over it is just to good he's so squishy. Only redeeming quality of this movie

The monsters were kinda hype.

I remember they made an entire physics engine on how they glitch around the battlefield.

But other than that... The movie breaks its own rules too many times, and for a movie playing it straight, that's kinda Sci-fi sin #1.

I love this fucking movie

I've always thought that this movie is seriously underrated.

Great for Cruise fans because he's in it.

Great for people who hate Cruise because he dies over and over again.

This is such a great movie

Its not really very similar in the end, but it is based on/inspired by a manga

It's a light novel, as stated in the Wikipedia article you linked.
It also seems to have a manga adaptation and a graphic novel adaptation, which I didn’t know.

So good. Also a banger of a song for the end credits. I want a sequel :(

Such a cool action flick. Up there with Fury Road for how rewatchable it is for me.

I watched this movie without knowing anything about it ahead of time. Just loved it!

The action Groundhog Day. I liked both, and Retroactive, Palm Springs, Map of Tiny Perfect Things, Meet Cute, and Stargate SG-1 S04E06 "Window of Opportunity". Who invented the time loop plot the first time around?

Check out the similarly plotted Star Trek TNG S05E18 "Cause and Effect", and its equivalent Outer Limits 1995 S05E16 "Deja vu".

There is a fantasy Groundhog Day too, Princess Cursed in Time. After decades of mediocre fairytales, finally something that rivals Tre nøtter til Askepott I can recommend to international viewers. It's on the German KiKA channel today at 12 (they import our mediocre fairytales too, though).

You should check out Arq on Netflix.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things was better than I expected. I love the song from its soundtrack, 1992 by The Bruises. I wish there was more to the song, but it is just soundtrack music.

Anyone who loves this movie would also like Arq (on Netflix).
