Summary

LA Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong reportedly killed an op-ed critical of President-elect Trump’s cabinet picks, demanding it be paired with an opposing viewpoint.

The editorial, which criticized controversial nominees like Pete Hegseth and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was replaced last-minute by a Trump-sympathetic column.

Soon-Shiong has faced staff backlash for pushing a more Trump-friendly editorial stance, including rejecting endorsements of Democratic candidates and hiring conservative voices.

His actions are part of a broader trend of billionaire media owners softening coverage of Trump, prompting resignations and subscriber losses at major outlets.

LA Times owner reportedly killed

Don't do this to me in this climate, OP.

With all the billionaires rushing to kiss the ring, the richest cabinet ever by a large margin, the media just rolling over at every chance it gets… it’s really hard not to feel like we’re already in full blown fascism, and this has all just been the preview.

I really hope I’m insane and paranoid.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 36 points 1 week ago

Of course we are. ABC just settled a lawsuit from Trump, paying $6M into his presidential library instead of fighting it out.

Every media outlet knows they are going to lose either by fiat or by attrition with the full arm of the US government behind Trump.

You think they'd do this if Harris won?

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Things aren't looking good. I still have hope that the CIA/military will intervene before he takes office, but not much. I'm hoping that when he completely screws the pooch with the economy, and the housing markets crash in a year or two, his own supporters will take him out,

If we're lucky the Republicans will have learned nothing, and will get mired in petty infighting and stupid bullshit political theater until the mid terms, and people are pissed enough to flip the house\senate. But the judicial appointments are going to put the shackles on future administrations, and progressive policy for decades unless the problem of extremist judges is addressed successfully

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago

It's not impossible to get rid of these fascist judges, there just needs to be enough political willpower. I wish I was more hopeful about that willpower coming forth.

I have 0 hope about any internal action against Trump or Russian owned Reps. I've seen 0 action that would indicate the willingness for that.

When Trump crashes the economy his cult will just continue blaming Dems and the "deep state" someone in the administration (besides Trump) will be made into a scapegoat and it'll just continue on.

[–] Tyfud@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They're not going to intervene. I promise.

They should. But they won't. They absolutely won't. They've already made that clear.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 63 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What's to be critical about a bunch of sex offenders, financial fraudsters and Nazis?

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They don't return their shopping carts

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

That's their right as Americans, damn it! What do we pay our elderly to go out into Walmart parking lots in the snow for? Do they not get minimum wage?

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I mean all the cancer kids who got duped by the cancer charity that Trump and his kid defrauded are dead now anyway. That makes it a victimless crime, right?

Gosh, you mean when he blocked the Kamala endorsement, it wasn't a one-off gesture to maintain neutral independence?

Something about depose

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The author should publish it independently and allow the Streisand effect to do its work.

Can't probably isn't the right word. May be ill advised though.

[–] sqw@lemmy.sdf.org 0 points 1 week ago

yeah probably cant without severe consequences for the journalist

[–] teft@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sure would be nice if all these rich south african immigrants would fuck off.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, the only immigrants I know of that need deporting are the ultra rich shit bags who overstayed their visas, dodge their taxes, and try to buy their way into government positions. Basically the people that Trump cozies up to the most.

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Had me in the first half...

[–] TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Always the bottom line.

[–] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

odd contrast considering his daughter was pro-union and stuff.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

You know, I get it. Right now any opposition to our God King is likely to end you up on a list for retribution.

Those authoritarian screws are going to turn pretty quickly.

But most the news media is just a mouthpiece for the right or the left there's very little fair and balanced reporting these days. Here is good off getting your news from Reddit, Lemmy, or TikTok as you are from getting it from anywhere else.

I wonder how much this guy makes from this paper. Maybe he's willing to tank it for better profits from his other ventures
