So they just... f*ck off and die.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 33 minutes ago

They get even cooler. When they're larva they straight up vomit at predators.

As defense mechanisms, larvae emit clicks as a warning and can also regurgitate intestinal contents, confirmed as having a deterrent effect on a variety of predators

“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand."

Moth just fucks

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago

Luna moth: You stupid mammal

[–] kamiheku@sopuli.xyz 37 points 1 day ago (3 children)

What letter is the black blob covering?

[–] TechieDamien@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 hours ago

No idea. Maybe it isn't even a letter?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 19 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Or 'ra', it's a petrol moth.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 19 hours ago

So say we all!

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 60 points 1 day ago (4 children)

how do they get the energy to lay new eggs? or grow into full sized moths?

[–] Strawberry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 20 hours ago

They eat nonstop and get fat as caterpillars, then spend most of their energy metamorphosing, and then the rest is for fucking and sucking

[–] alteredEnvoy@sopuli.xyz 81 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wikipedia says they eat enough as caterpillars and do not eat as adults

[–] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can relate: Got really fat during my 20s and now I'm losing it all 👍

[–] sean@lemmy.wtf 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

im on the same exact journey, 31 now and 50 lbs down since may

[–] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Just a regular Sunday night, laying eggs

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] NeatoBuilds@mander.xyz 1 points 43 minutes ago

We're duck brothers we don't lay eggs

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They get energy from drinking the tears of Dark Souls players who have to fight it as a boss

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago

It's too bad they didn't make the Moonlight Butterflies in the Crystal Caves hostile. Imagine the player tears after having to navigate narrow invisible walkways while dodging laser spam.

[–] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I was thinking the same thing. And you got an answer too. Cheers 🥂

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 11 points 23 hours ago

This is somewhat common for various bugs.

Could they add a mouth and digestive system through DNA editing?

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 31 minutes ago (1 children)

They do have a mouth, but it's like our appendix. It doesn't do anything.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 points 26 minutes ago (1 children)

Ok. Still could use some crisper magic to give it some sustenance for a longer life

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 21 minutes ago (1 children)

And then it takes over the world, Sam. Is that what you want to happen?

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 points 16 minutes ago

There are billions of uglier things we could be subjects to

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 hours ago

Probably not, they're terrible at DNA editing.

[–] HorreC@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Seeing them in person is surreal, they look so amazing up close.

[–] brlemworld@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)
[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 points 31 minutes ago

No, these are moths.

[–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 7 points 22 hours ago

Lots of metamorphic bugs do this. Even the ones that eat as adults often die that same year, after 3-20 years as a larva.
