The company said the changes are for users in the European Union, in response to evolving EU regulatory feedback

Sounds like a petulant child throwing a tantrum for being told 'no'.

minimal set of data points including a person's age, location, gender, and how a person engages with ads.

Sounds like they're skirting the regulation.

allowing people to connect with the brands and products that are most relevant to them.

"Connecting with brands and products" is not even remotely close to why people use social media.

Tf are they going on about?!

Marketers using all of their skills to try to sell the idea that they're a good guy doing something people (who aren't ad buyers) want.

Sad part is they are probably able to fool some people.

Eu needs to just block fb en large and be done with it.

Good thing FB and Insta themselves are skippable.

[–] zerozaku@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Sadly WhatsApp isn't skippable where I live but thankfully Meta takes cautious approach enshittifiying it.

It will relate to users who choose to see less personalised adverts in their feeds.

ah, because regular evil wasn't enough.

Ooh, that's bad... Anyway...

Well, let's hope it'll piss people off into seing the light

[–] RedditWanderer@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago

Ya can't skip the ads, but you can skip the platform! (I dont use them but yeah hopefully it backfires)

Seems to me a lot of people are getting an intolerance to light, so don't expect too much.

what we do in the shadows or smthng

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Not for me. I've found a clever way to avoid these ads.

TL;DR

If you choose to let us track you'll get personalized ads

If you choose to NOT let us track you'll get tons of intrusive and unskipable ads

Having the choice is what matters right?

[–] JayleneSlide@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh, I skip FB and IG ads completely. It's crazy: I didn't even have to install anything, and the ads just disappeared one day.

But seriously, the "your attention is being monetized" model makes for such an awful experience for me. I'm envious of people who can enjoy the world and the Internet when ads are everywhere.

[–] BlemboTheThird@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

I think most of them simply opt to not use the Internet as often

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

Friends don’t let friends use Facebook.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Chill out, I already had enough reasons to not use those sites.

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Wow, they are buying ads but haven't made any new content since 2012?. Must be a desert bus for hope promotion.

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

When I used Instagram, I used it through Instander for extra features (and ad blocking). It worked pretty well, and it's a mod of Instagram so the interface was the same.

My MAGA mom will be so annoyed…

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 15 points 3 days ago

She’ll likely just blame it on Obama and “the libs” and abortion, and “the gays”, and then post on Facebook about that. At least that’s what mine will do.

Hmm, I swapped FB with Lemmy for my quick dial when the elections heated up, guess I'll just leave it that way.

'Unusable' social media apps.

[–] maniel@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago

Cool, most of the time THEY want ME to watch something on the platform, it's not like I come to Facebook to watch stupid shit
