Yeah, but then they'd have to start paying federal income taxes. That's a big part of why their statehood referendums are always so close, it's a legit pros and cons list.
Last time "yes" did win by just a few percentage points though.
The citizens do seem to be split between the choices, and in the end it is and should be up to them. I find it not surprising that the biggest reason for opposition outside PR is because it would change the balance of senators. Which is rich, since Congress as a whole needs a revamp in representation count in the House anyway, but we've held to an outdated number because it's "hard" to change.
I read there's another possible option - go back under Spanish governance. I wonder how much support that even gets, or if Spain would even want it.
There is another option, it's independence. That third camp is not as popular but it's full of the most romantic of the boriquas

In response to questions on the comments, and whether Trump was planning to publicly denounce them, Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “Due to President Trump’s plans to cut taxes, end inflation, and stop the surge of illegal immigrants at the southern border, he has more support from the Hispanic American community than any Republican in recent history.”
News outlets need to stop giving non-responses space in their stories. The PR people don't answer questions because they can just say whatever pro-candidate message they want and the journalists will print it. Say they gave a response that didn't address the subject and move on, don't promote their alternate messaging.
They'll sanewash but not bullshitwash.

Someone should've reminded him Puerto Rico is an American territory, and its residents are full fledged American citizens. While the island itself gets no electoral college votes, any of its citizens living in one of the 50 states get the same rights and privileges as the rest of us.
Not only do they get no electoral college votes, they don't get to vote for president at all, though they can vote in the primaries.
Right. Unless they've moved away from Puerto Rico and live somewhere in the mainland now, which is a whole shitload of them.
The mere concept of denying certain citizens a right to vote, or a reduced/amplified vote, based on their where they live is entirely anti-democratic.
It's amazing how much Americans have just accepted blindly as the pinnacle of freedom.

Agreed. We have similar issues with our electoral college in general. The framers were quite specific in designing a system that wasn't too democratic. One of the reasons for this was, ironically, a fear that a populist demagogue could take over at some point in the future.
Go figure. Though I suppose no system is completely immune to demagoguery.

People who are the butt of such jokes have an innate tendency to agree and pretend it’s not about them because they’re one of the good ones. It’s sad but that’s basically the same thing happening with the white people the Nazis deemed weren’t pure enough, or the whites the early US settlers used to hate on. In another time, JD Vance would have been too Irish to be Trumps VP. That’s what this whole ideology is based on, there’s no fixed in group, the out group target is always changing.

- Imagine your love for them would be reciprocated in their love for you
- Act like "I'm one of the good ones" and oppress people who are like you but don't perfectly match up to the idealised figure of the authoritarian leader
Oppressing others is a win/win for people who enjoy pretending to important AND bullying others, and I can't see it ever completely going out of style.

And each one of them were present in that arena.
Do I think all the morons present finally understand what they are supporting? Nope. But in a tight race, you only need a couple here and there to win.
This gave them more than a couple.
With the controversy I watched the entire routine. It was cringey punching down the nearly entire set. He asked the Latinos to cheer, then joked that all the Latinos present were evidence of illegal border crossings. The one bit of hope I got watching it is there were few people laughing and cheering at the horrible jokes. The main positive crowd reactions were from empty platitudes of how good America is, and a joke about Harris.
The other bit of hope is that the people attending are some of the worst of the worst. So if even they are starting to think this is going too far, hopefully the rest are starting to pull the wool from their eyes.
Let’s hope they alienated a lot of people who had planned to vote for him.

In US politics you ha e to win someone's vote twice. Firstly to have them think you're the best choice, and secondly to have them vote.
This will prompt a lot of tepid Harris supporters to actually vote for her.
Trump headlines are spreading like wildfire and we’ve learned nothing of 2016.
Funniest thing is that if that dude had just said, "Cuba," this would have been a non-issue. The joke structure would have been exactly the same, and it would have still been a dog whistle for racists, but Cuban Americans are largely anti-communist ex-pats. They probably wouldn't have been thrilled to hear Cuba described as garbage, but if they got angry, it probably would have blown over by saying, "the joke was a reference to what communism has done to cuba." Instead, he picked an island full of people that can easily move to the US mainland and vote. Absolutely spectacular.

Forgive my pessimism, but while this is the sort of thing that could sink a "normal" campaign, the cult of personality around Trump has been weathering stuff like this since 2016 or even earlier. I'll believe that this is impacting voter sentiment when I see it reflected in the results after election day. Until then, it just feels like more wishful thinking.
