During the vice presidential debate, Vance similarly refused to answer if he would contest this year’s election if Trump loses

Senator JD Vance repeated a tired Republican lie from 2020 — that Donald Trump actually won the election, despite all evidence to the contrary — and then doubled down on it during a recent recorded encounter.

On Thursday, comedian Jason Selvig posted a clip of an interaction he had with Vance on X. During their brief encounter, Selvig repeatedly asked Vance if Trump won in 2020. The settled issue of who won the 2020 election came up again after Vance told viewers who tuned into Tuesday's vice presidential debate that he would have helped Trump carry out his "alternative electors" scheme to maintain power in the White House.

"Who won the 2020 election? Could you just answer? Did Donald Trump win?" Selvig asked.

"Yes," Vance replied.

So that's why he wouldn't answer it during the debate

I mean, Walz outright called him out on it.

The only reason trump allowed vance to be his VP (aside from all the ties to right wing tech billionairres...) is that he has committed to not having a spine. pence had a spine for all of one day and did his job and obeyed the will of the people. vance obeys the will of trump and knows he will be fired (if not given some Novichok) should he turn from that.

I mean, was there any doubt?

[-] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 20 hours ago

Never, but it's nice to actually have him say it out loud.

I think it is important to understand the nuance here. In many ways, the Republican party is now a victim of its own rhetoric.

They have convinced a sizeable portion of the base that Trump won the election, regardless of mountains of evidence to the contrary. That is no small feat for the propaganda machine.

The problem is, there are saner folks in the Republican party -- we have seen many of them come out with very public endorsements of Harris, and that's only the famous ones. The Republicans know they need to stop the bleeding.

But the dumber among their base see this as an ultimatum. Saying Trump lost is playing into what they think is a biased media narrative. Vance didn't answer the question during the debate because to do so would have instantly alienated him from his own party base.

To retain anyone who isn't a bozo and is actually trying to make an informed decision, it would be important for the party to distance themselves from the conspiratorial nonsense once and for all. For all intents and purposes, it is currently impossible for them to do that.

Thus it is good that we speak up with any evidence like this that Team Trump is the same old bunch of weird losers they always have been. Regardless of what concessions they try to make to woo the non-crazies, facts are facts, and alternative facts don't exist.

Yeah this is what scares me about the MAGA nut jobs. Fox News and Trump have created a monster that they can try to steer but don't fully control. When Fox said that Trump lost the election, the MAGAts fled to News Max and OANN. When Trump even hinted that people should get vaccinated, he got booed and immediately walked it back.

It's the same reason that we now face a government shutdown every few months. They've driven their base so far to the right that they now have no choice but to appease that base or be eaten alive. Once Trump's McDonald's encrusted arteries eventually give out, this madness isn't going to just die with him.

Hah, Donny slipped up a few times, maybe vance is just fresh and hasn’t burned out yet.

[-] hopesdead@startrek.website 25 points 21 hours ago

If you actually believed that, then wouldn’t you give up on an illegal third term?

[-] eran_morad@lemmy.world 19 points 21 hours ago

Illegal is like flypaper to republicans.

[-] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

If he won the 2020 election then he is ineligible to run in 2024, as he is nearing the end of his second term! Let's get this before a judge, post haste!

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Then you were a terrible President, but a President nonetheless.

[-] AtomicHotSauce@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago

Of course he did. What’s he gonna do, stop suckling the teat? None of these jackasses turn on him until he sells them out.

[-] tipicaldik@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

he's just sticking to his marching orders, leading by example and showing what a good little brown-shirt he can be.
