I think the UK does more video surveillance than the US (e.g., https://www.yahoo.com/news/britain-more-surveillance-cameras-per-151641361.html ).

Still no match for the babushkas, of course.

Completely agree. But if you look into it a little bit, you'll see how it was a British guy--George Orwell--who predicted what we're all becoming in terms of surveillance. They've been ahead of us Americans on that game.

Just try to not sort your recycling correctly in Japan. The Aunties won’t let you do it, and will instruct you for as long as it takes on the correct protocol.

Not my experience. My experience is that the trash collectors just won't take it because the bags are clear, so they can see whether or not things are sorted properly.

You only do the walk of shame bringing your trash back in once before you learn to do it properly. Also, trash rules vary pretty significantly from one area to the next, so it's a learning process anytime you move.
