I was talking this with a friend and we were checking where homosexuality is criminalized and we realized there is a correlation with muslim countries.

religion. also its only relatively recently that “christian” majority nations have legalised it.

a lot of places in america still hate homosexuality as well

[–] Maajmaaj@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

It's because of a book.

In most Muslim countries, religious law is THE law. There is no separation of church and state.

[–] waterbogan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

This is the core of the issue. It does also depend on which strand of denomination of Islam is in play. Unfortunately most of the larger ones are extremely illiberal, and the ones that are not (such as the Ahmadiyya) are actively persecuted by those that are

“Newer” religions, using the term loosely, don’t have that many followers. One way to have more followers is to encourage your existing followers to have more children. That’s why birth control, abortion, and such are banned or discouraged by some religions. Homosexuality is the same thing: a gay couple isn’t going to “be fruitful and multiply”, they’ll just “be”. So if you ban homosexuality, maybe you’ll get more children and your religion will grow.

This map is blatantly wrong. It focuses on a small part of lgbt discriminations. And it is at least outdated.

Right now Russia is hard against lgbt and Italy is doing stuff as well. I wouldn't be surprised if things were bad in several east Europe countries (Poland, Hungary...)

And in many countries if it's not an actual crime to be lgbt there are many discriminations.

This map is mere racist shit.

This map is up to date and doesnt look a great deal different from the one OP linked

Ditto this one, lasted updated June 2023

And as the second article is entitled, 52% Muslim, 42% Christian. It's not a competition so I don't see the difference to be relevant.

[–] waterbogan@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It isnt a competition, but thats not the point. What it is is an explanation - countries where Islam has a significant or majority presence generally have anti-gay legislation, whereas that is less so for Christian countries. Both are awful, but Islam is worse for LGBT people

What about it is wrong and informed by race based information? Islam is not a race.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Although its true that there is discrimination on every country, there is a big difference between discrimination by people and being persecuted by authorites. Currently in Russia there is no law that criminalizes homosexuality, altough there are restrictions of expressions. (See map below).

Im sorry that you think this is "racist shit", but it is important to be aware of what countries are against homosexuality and what countries are not and see what the reason behind is. If you have sources that contribute to this, by all means post them here.

Arresting people for dissemination of any information to children regarding homosexuality is criminalising homosexuality. You can be arrested for saying, "It's ok to be gay", or "I'm gay and I'm normal". That is outright criminalisation of homosexuality.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and you dont see any difference from that example you gave and be given death sentence for being gay?

[–] crapwittyname@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Of course I do. When did I suggest I didn't? You're arguing in bad faith to apologise for Russia. Why are you doing this?

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

When did I suggest to apologise for Russia? or that I think they have a free pass to be homophobic? Do you think I am also not against all the shit thats hapenning in Russia?

[–] bouh@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Homophobia is far from the best angle to criticize the religious fascist governments of north africa and the middle east. All fascism are equally bad. And replacing homosexual criminalization with Muslim criminalisation is merely a different color of fascism.

France is going full apartheid against Muslim these days in the name of fucking laicity! What do you think will be next when they were protesting against gay marriage a few years ago?

We should fight for human rights, not against this or that colour of fascism. And this post is merely promoting racism against Arabs. Because people don't care about your god if you don't have the right color.

So your plan is to fight for Muslims to be well integrated into the country, and then, once there are muslisms, who are homophobic and have penalty of death/life jail in their countries, then we can fight for lgbt rights? Does that really sound good to you?

Imagine, we are already struggling for lgbt rights in west europe and you want to introduce a group of people that are clearly against lgbt rights...

We should fight for human rights, not against this or that colour of fascism.

Are arab countries also fighting for human rights?

Because people don’t care about your god if you don’t have the right color.

I dont care for anyones god. Once again, we are already struggling to get lgbt rights from christians, and now we have to fight for rights against muslisms too?

[–] bouh@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes. You have to fight for lgbt rights against everyone unfortunately. It's not a matter of religion, it's a matter of idiots attack any minority.

You may not realize it, but lgbt and Muslims are in the same boat. Fighting eachother will only make fascists happy. But once one will be bleeding to death, the other will be the new target. They only care about having a minority to blame for all the problems, so they have people to beat to death. It won't solve any problem, but that's how fascism work.

You don't fight intolerance with intolerance. Especially if you are a minority that's not in power. That's what fascist Muslim are doing and you can see how it is a success for them. Lgbt are not enough so they are also killing women and Christians.

BTW the women problem means it's not even a matter of minority.

Im sorry but I am not going to fight for rights for people that are against lgbt rights. That will only bring the removal of lgbt rights in the future.

I 100% agree with you here about fascism. Unfortunately, LGBT are at a disadvantage here, as Muslisms are clearly against LGBT rights. LGBT rights in West Europe are not perfect, but at least we have some and we are still fighting for them, we cannot bring groups that are clearly against them.

You don’t fight intolerance with intolerance

Unfortunately, you do. There is a thing called the paradox of tolerance:

Philosopher Karl Popper described the paradox of tolerance as the seemingly counterintuitive idea that “in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance.” Essentially, if a so-called tolerant society permits the existence of intolerant philosophies, it is no longer tolerant.

You cannot fight intolerance with tolerance.

[–] bouh@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Ok, you're actually acting like all Muslims are against lgbt. You're half a fascist already.

[–] electrogamerman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you’re actually acting like all Muslims are against lgbt.

and that's why the maps are a good source of information. The laws of muslim countries against LGBT doenst help to think otherwise.

[–] bouh@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Those countries are not democracies. You understand what that means don't you?

[–] Seriouslyblack@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Way to completely ignore everything else they were saying. You’re determined to be right even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
