It's hard to define what "Hexbear" is anymore, with so many of the posts coming from random Lemmy instances. Our brand and subculture are diluted and it shows. A lot more confrontation and friction in threads. So it got me thinking. How can we recapture the authentic sense of what Hexbear is and do something nice for the world as a community?

If you've been watching India's moon mission, you know how happy everyone looks in the footage. They're so proud of their work and the whole nation is congratulating them. Actually the whole world. It's a massive publicity boost and unites an otherwise polarised nation. Well what's stopping us from doing that? Think of all the cool things we could accomplish with a space programme. Designing new rockets, exploring new galaxies, maybe colonising a planet or two as a forum. We would let everyone know what Hexbear represents and could mine asteroids for orbital factories that supply our fleet of ships. One thing we might build is a Dyson Sphere, or maybe even a generation ship to raise the next ten generations of our families together on our way to another solar system. I'm a plant scientist and could probably even grow lettuce in microgravity.

We can do this. I just ask that you trust me and send me the money to do so.

This post made me realize building a space program is the nation level "solution" equivalent of "if we just have a kid it will save our marriage"

I'm waiting for my comrades to join me. Where is everyone.

So is this going to be a kerbal thing or a modded minecraft thing?

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 23 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This is the real thing. This is your chance to visit other worlds.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

Hmm. I do hate living on this planet. Let me go flip over my couch and see if any change falls out.

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Getting outside the ionosphere sounds great and all but I kinda need gravity for my bowls to work.

Moving to Saturn as a remedy for constipation.

[–] ThePokeYen@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As Hexbear's resident rocket nerd/engineer I am prepared to take up the mantle on this worthy endeavor.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you can design the spaceships, I'm good at X4 and know where to put them. The asteroid belt.

[–] ThePokeYen@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah man i flew a cardboard rocket to like 1700ft i got u

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's pretty high. With our collective experience I think we could get a lot higher.

[–] ThePokeYen@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah sure. totally. just send me like a few tens of those millions and ill see what i can do k thx

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It wouldn't be ethical for me to take your money and then give you funds from the Starfleet budget. Instead we'll let you pilot a mining ship and you can harvest all the precious metals you want from asteroids. One asteroid and you're paid back with trillions of dollars of interest.

[–] ThePokeYen@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And how do you plan to get that mining ship up there?? Ive got u and Hexfleet by the throat now if i dont see the money flowing in by tomorrow morning you will have NOTHING

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I thought that would be common sense. Design a rocket that lowers the cost per kilo into orbit to $10. Then build self-assembling orbital factories to design a basic asteroid harvesting platform. Use the revenue and resources from that to build a mining fleet. Snowball that into full orbital shipyards that can produce thousands of mining ships per day. Then everyone gets paid back.

[–] ThePokeYen@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you need my hexpertise to accomplish step number 1. no rocket, no factories, no hexfleet. all you have to do is send me 1 billion usd

[–] riseuppikmin@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Now that the dirty owl is a capitalist can we make them put up the money first?

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think we should all put up money. If all 24700 of us send me just $40485.83, I will have one billion dollars for this. I've already contributed $15.

[–] riseuppikmin@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Makes sense to me.

[–] Freeanotherday@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I got 6 maplebucks I can spare.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If I can convert them to cash, I will accept any kind of video game money. I'll even sell your MMORPG accounts.

I would happily send some billionaires on the Hexbear rocket to space

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

You're spreading FUD. I want us to come together hard.

[–] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have an engineering degree ~~that has nothing to do with aerospace~~ and I would be willing to provide my talents for the low low price of 1 million dollars

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

Would you really choose $1m today over trillions of dollars once your ship successfully snares even one asteroid?

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

[shoots off a bottle rocket] There's your hexbear moon mission, pal.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 19 points 1 year ago

I'm so good at shooting those without them burning my hand. A rocket is the same principles with a different fuel.

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My pappy† always used to say, “you can’t have a nation without culture, language, and borders”. I think this sort of project could really bring us together by keeping our attention on our ideals for the future. We could call it futurism!

†My pappy was a fascist if that matters

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

We could go from a simple shitposting forum to the vanguard of humanity. The new cultural blueprint for our species as a multiplanetary civilisation.

[–] StellarTabi@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

moon mission

we talking real ones or just another deep space fake?

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The real thing. You could be sitting on the moon sipping lunar water by this time next year if you just send me $2m over Venmo.

[–] rikonium@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 year ago

lunar water

[shudders in silent sea]

[–] cynesthesia@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm concerned about this idea, this seems like a lot of work to do on our own. what about if we piggyback on an existing project? I was thinking star citizen. they've been developing for a long time so the game must be both great and close to release. we could all buy in now and then do space things in that game together!

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

It wouldn't stand out. Reddit already made Dreddit in EVE and it was accidentally wildly successful. We can't match that level of success in Star Citizen since it's full of well-established players. Space flight though is an emerging industry. There isn't even a lunar colony yet, let alone a spaceship capable of FTL travel through the warp. With so many subscribers in c/science I think we could easily achieve that just by starting a megathread.

[–] HotSoda@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm down. I don't hook anymore, but for an endeavor like this maybe retirement isn't the best option.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If anyone wants to get a job to fund this, I think we all owe you a round of applause from the Hexbear Starfleet.

I built a couple of those Estes model rockets when I was a kid, I figure if we just scale it up enough we can get to the moon no problem.

Step 1 is to get the biggest cardboard tube we can find.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cardboard's cheap as hell. It's carbon too.

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

Nature's carbon fiber, 100% recyclable/compostable

[–] xXthrowawayXx@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The hexbear space programs goal should be to put gigatons of gravel in orbit to kickstart Kessler syndrome.

remember those "Chinese spy balloons"? We totally could do something

[–] DavidGarcia@feddit.nl 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

while I support disassembling earth for resources, let me assure you that your instance's culture still stands out plenty among all the Reddit clones

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It stands out amongst them, but what about Lemmygrad? Their memes subcommunity directly appears next to ours in my feed. The only thing differentiates us from them now is that we have a Starfleet and they do not.
