Don't normally post on Reddit but figured I'd give it a go here. Excited to see ray tracing on the Steam Deck even if it's not great, as my desktop GPU is an aging rx580 thus incapable of RT. Would like to try RT Minecraft, or other older games with this feature.

How many games perform well enough on Steam Deck that it would ever be worth enabling RT?

[–] foggenbooty@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

None really. Maybe some niche tech demos or proof of concepts, but I don't think RT has any real place on the deck.

Probably not many. The way I see it even with a beast of a PC in most instances it's a gimmick, but will be a big deal in the future when it has greater adoption and general support. I just want to mess about with the tech demos, like Quake etc.

almost no one

This is more intended to be used by the linux desktop with amd gpus

I know, but OP mentioned being excited to see it on the SD.

Doom Eternal gets like 30 FPS with Ray Tracing enabled on the Steam Deck, granted in low settings
you can already test this in the current Mesa version, the upcoming Messa 23.2 just enables it by default

It performs decently enough in Doom Eternal, but generally I don't think ray tracing will ever be power efficient enough to be worth it on a handheld device.
