Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, cool stuff about the author, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s The Far Side!

I had to look this one up, it’s a reference to a mountain climber, George Mallory. From Wikipedia:

Once, when asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory purportedly replied, "Because it's there."

Alright, it's my turn: I don't get this one

Instead of climbing the mountain "because it's there," he's descending into the inverted-mountain-shaped hole "because it's not there."

Oh my god, rofl that's a fun puzzle

Probably the only difficult Far Side I got on my own without an explanation

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Congratulations! This one totally stumped me

I think you would need to know the quote. I heard it a long time ago and never forgot it for some reason.

Another one that goes completely over my head

I think it's a reference to a quote from the mountain climber George Mallory. When asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb everest, he replied "because it's there".

Damn, a quote from 1923. How niche

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 months ago

That's understandable as it occurred at very high altitude indeed. You could say it literally went over everyone's head, when it happened!

The more I see posts that say "I don't get it", the older I feel. I guess I never realised how much Larson's comics reflected and commented on the time they were written

That's actually a pretty clever subversion. Nice.

Since this is a comic from 1982: what's the purpose of the title?

[–] zzz711@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

It's the day it was posted to the fat side website
