I mean if it tripled the weight then one could assume it made it heavier...

Probably just clarifying that the mass was increased as well. Pretty important as the weight could increase independently of mass if for example the phone was taken to a new planet with stronger gravity after the phone case was installed.

Maybe it incorporates some Element Zero and the Mass Effect altered the local gravity
