His last name being "Sobotka" didn't give it away? They might as well named him Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz
Also he donates the stained glass to a polish church and that sets everything off. Ziggy mentions it constantly as well. It's hard to miss.
Well, I don't know the context of the character, but that could mean anything from a polish person from whateverowice, a German whose ancestors came to the ruhr area in the 1830s or an American who's never left Chicago but still considers himself a true pole.
