To discuss: was My Chemical Romance unfairly dunked on during their fame? Was their music actually pretty good when you ignored the memes?

Three cheers for sweet revenge and Welcome to the black parade are S tier, change my mind

In in my 40s and I can say that their music was pretty great. Their lyrics were super cringey, but ignoring lyrics is what pop music is about.

Danger Days was also pretty criminally underrated.

Danger Days was their best album, and easily one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Like, that's not even a fucking debate. Sing, Planetary, Na Na Na, Summertime, DESTROYA, Vampire Money, Save Yourself I'll Hold Them Back, Kids From Yesterday, S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W... That album is banger after banger after banger.

Agreed. I've had my copies of both on CD since I was a teenager.

I'd say they were dunked on for getting famous but they got famous for being quite good for the genre.

They were also dunked on for being "emo"

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago

Yeah, dunked on by the mainstream for being emo and dunked on by the emo scene for being too mainstream, lol.

I'm an older guy, so when I listened to Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge I heard a lot of Queen and Iron Maiden in it. I thought it was great, some of their songs are top tier. But I can see how if you were in high school at the time and didn't embrace their style, you might not like it. I mean, even Queen and Iron Maiden had their detractors back in the day...

Nope. I particularly liked Welcome to the Black Parade and Famous Last Words

They weren't dunked on enough.
