Adjusting the rabbit ears when you change channels.
I was fortunate enough to live in a house with an antenna on a tower on the side of the house.... We had a rotator though, so it was always guesswork as to which direction to point it in order to get the best signal.
I had a friend that had a rotator, the control dial was marked (with scotch tape and sharpie) for the more common channels.
Your friend was smarter than my family.
