So I recently put togheter a NAS and now I'm trying to learn to use it. I got a few questions if anyone can point me to some documentation or tutorial:

  • Can I set up more users to access the same SMB folder?
  • How to set up the current version of Jellyfin?
  • How to remote access Nextcloud?

If anyone runs into similar problems:

  • Jellyfin -> if kubernets gives "back off restarting ..." it most likely is a missconfiguration, what worked for me was enabling automatic permission to the folder with movies and music to 777 recursively (not secure but I haven't tried other permission yet
  • to access all apps: I just used tailscale and added in app configuration route 192.168.1.0/24 and now it works flawlessly

  1. Yes. In the TrueNAS UI you can configure users and groups. You can add users to common groups and set the permissions of the share to allow for group read/write. If all of the clients are on Windows, I wanna say you can set permissions on the share via Windows Explorer which will allow you to make more granular permission changes.

  2. I forget exactly because I only briefly used TrueNAS in this capacity, but there was a community repo you need to add for more apps than the default. I think I remember the default repo having Emby but not Jellyfin, or vice-versa. Someone may be able to help me remember the name of the repo in the comments.

  3. Set up the app as normal for local access and just forward the port from your router to the IP of your TrueNAS instance. There wasn’t anything tricky you need to do beyond a regular installation.

I have truecharts installed but when I reboot the NAS kubernets would give "back off restarting error", I managed to figure that out. Now I need to figure ask how to access the apps from outside the local network, I did try to forward local port 9001(Nextcloud) to 80 and 443 but I still can't access it. I also read somewhere that that's a security risk so I was wondering if I should try to set up a free DNS or VPN. What do you think?

You could always try tailscale until you figure something else out. Its not really self hosting but its better than having everything accessible to the public internet. Set it up in browser and follow their set up guide then install tailscale app on Truenas and whatever other device you plan on using it with.
