Louisiana GOP Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency due to a police officer shortage.

Landry's executive order issued Thursday lifts limits on how many new employees Louisiana sheriffs can hire and on payroll increases for their departments.

Landry, who previously had a career in law enforcement, said that police departments in the state are experiencing record-low employments “resulting in increased crime and less public safety.” As of July, sheriff's offices statewide were down 1,800 deputies, Landry said.

Hmm, I wonder why no one wants to be a pig? 🤔

[–] digeridoo@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago

Nobody wants to be a pig, or live in Louisiana.

Even if you want to be the one good cop and arrest the bad ones, you cannot. It's illegal to be a good person and a cop both, so no good person would want to be a cop.

High risk, and everybody hates you. Fuck that shit.

Though not as high risk as being a logger, a fishing worker, a pilot, a roofer, a general construction worker, any job driving a car or semi, any agricultural laborer, and certain types of maintenance work, among a few others.*

Granted, but cops are dangerous within their own hierarchy. They have a clubhouse mentality that people definitely need to fit in or death could be an outcome.

I don't think the risk is as high as they perceive it to be and that seems to be a huge issue
