What is the deal with these people? Other than obvious mental illness I mean.

[–] geekworking@lemmy.world 32 points 9 months ago

Apparently, a lot of them are trying to find a way to avoid paying child support.

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 28 points 9 months ago (2 children)

It makes them feel powerful. They have the hidden incantation that sets them above the rest of the proles. I would imagine the venn diagram of flat earthers and sovereign citizens overlaps a lot.

Also absolves them of contributing to society completely. They're freeloaders

I mean they are living somewhere. They are paying rent to somebody and that person is paying property taxes.

Plus they are contributing to this community.

[–] RedditWanderer@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Do you know anything about sovcits? They send these same letters to their landlords and they wouldn't pay rent if they could.

Other people are paying their internet bills and phones, and uploading content here, while others host it. Again these idiots contribute nothing. There's plenty of other shit to post about.

They are freeloaders.

I've read that legal opinion and have fought them in court so yes I do.

You have a point. They would be pretty quickly evicted if they just stopped paying rent and started spouting this bullshit. I would wager that virtually all sovereign citizens are paying rent to someone. E: Actually let me revise this. I'd wager most are in prison. Of the ones that aren't, I'd wager most are paying rent.

But it takes their whole government check, (which they make sure is paid to them in actual dollars, not coupons) so they try to get everything else for free. You quickly notice not one of them ever has any money or job.

First amendment auditors or "constitutional scholars" are in the club as well.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They get convinced by someone on the internet that the government is all a scam and pay large sums of money to some guru to learn their methods, who then vanish into the ether as their new student loses their home or car.

Sovcits have roots in white supremacy.

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This is the treatise on sovereign citizens, doesn't mention anything about white supremacy and I've never heard of that connection. Can you elaborate?

What does Christian identity have to do with sovereign citizens? Link is broken for me.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I'm sorry! The idea was born out of the Christian Identity movement in the 1970s as part of the Posse Comitatus, a far right anti government movement who claimed that debt and taxes were an example of Jewish control over the state. Here is an article; https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/1998/hate-group-expert-daniel-levitas-discusses-posse-comitatus-christian-identity-movement-and
