I don't understand how gen Xers have more student loan debt than millennials. They should have been paying their loans down for 20 years by now.

Back to back financial meltdowns come to mind.

Graduate highschool early 2000s tech bust

Graduate college great recession

Hit peak earning potential, global pandemic and massive layoffs

Plus in that time almost total wage stagnation and destruction of pension systems and unions.
