Im creating this thread to discuss all things about Nostr and learn from your thoughts. Which your experiences using Nostr and things you like and dont like about it.

I want to try other things that are similar to Twitter, and Nostr seems like a very plausible choice. It seems, however, that there are some things that I might not like. For example, if my password get compromised, is there a way for my account to not be completely wiped out? Leave your experiences while using Nostr.

A little introduction about Nostr

spoiler

Nostr is a decentralized network protocol for a distributed social networking system. The name is an acronym for "Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays".

The simplest open protocol that is able to create a censorship-resistant global "social" network.. The first known implementation of the Nostr protocol dates back to Nov 7 2020, created by a developer known as fiatjaf.

The explicit goal of Nostr creators was to create a censorship resistant social network in response to global increase in internet censorship in 2020. The simplest open protocol that is able to create a censorship-resistant global "social" network once and for all.

Nostr is... compared to Mastodon/Fediverse, geared towards a different "threat model":

  • Not federated
    • it's up to you to post the same content to multiple relays, or not
  • Your key is your account
    • can't go down with an instance/relay
    • if you lose it, then you lost it
  • All messages are signed with your key
    • an instance/relay operator can't supplant you
  • If you get banned on a relay, you can use any other relay that isn't banning you, still with the same account (key)
    • harder to censor an account
    • harder to moderate
    • easier to "migrate" from one server to another
  • People who want to follow you, need to know your key and what relay(s) you post to
    • harder to discover people
  • Has a "like" system based on BTC micropayments
    • harder to game with bots, since each "like" costs actual money
    • more attractive to cryptobros

if my password get compromised, is there a way for my account to not be completely wiped out?

Your key is your account, anyone with access to your private key has full and unstoppable access to your account. AFAIK, there is no "key revocation" mechanism.
