OpenAI was deliberately structured to advance our mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity. The board remains fully committed to serving this mission. We are grateful for Sam's many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward.

That is the most generic statement ever. Someone done fucked up.

Do they not like him saying ai has the potential to derail society to anyone that would listen? Didnt they start as an ai company based on ethics and building a controlled model.

OpenAI started as a non-profit and was later changed to a regular company.

Doesn't matter how good your intentions are to base a company on ethics, if capitalism can find value in what you are doing, the value will be extracted at any cost, ethics be damned - at least until the lack of ethics starts hurting the bottom line.
