That's not a real reason. Most courts are recorded, have stenographer and apparently sketch artists. There's absolutely no reason for court sketch artists to exist in modern society. It's just silly and wreaks of some conservative tradition.

I don't think providing steady employment to a local artist is the worst thing taxes support.

Those recordings are not available to the public though, right? Isn’t that the difference? Or am I just mislead here?

I see why the tradition of it feels conservative. But I dunno. I think it’s cool. Seems like good culture.
