Likewise I’m annoyed with the whole glasses some how being either a new sex symbol, innocence, or technical prowess of which there is zero correlation.
Some people wear glasses but most do not. I have no problem with advertising showing glasses if it isn’t some obvious targeting or biases in play. In this case it appears to be the nerdy but sexy trope but maybe I’m wrong.
Interesting - at least 90% of people I've ever known in real life wear glasses. In fact at the moment I'm the only one who doesn't and I should probably get some eventually.
Maybe the human race is just getting worse at seeing and we're coping by trying to make the workaround seem cool and attractive.
BTW here are the stats of glasses wearing: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/127okj2/map_showing_the_percentage_of_people_with_glasses/
Hmm ... industrialized countries that can afford contact lenses and or corrective eye surgery are wearing glasses.... now. Just recently. Why because it is fucking hip.
Like I have no problem with people that actually wear or wore glasses because they needed them but there are droves and droves of tech wannabes do it for the fashion. That is the reality.
Glasses are now being associated with intellect like they were with the past but also somehow as innocence and cool. That is the problem I have with it just like how the OP has problems with with infantilization I have problems with the fucking disingenuous of that albeit it appears to be lesser received given the downvotes which makes me worried I offended someone who needs glasses. For that I am sorry!
Just watch movies of yesteryear and now. Perhaps I'm just old and bitter but feel like its blue being associated with boys and pink with girls. It seems wrong but maybe I'm just wrong.
So, you're mad that society has become more accepting of people wearing glasses? That's definitely a take.
No I’m not and that is my frustration similar to the OP.
The glasses just happened to be one facet for me because I literally had friends who started wearing glasses a couple of years ago when it was fashionable and now do not. You know when big bang theory was the show kind of thing.
Like if the unicorn was not pushing on the rims and they were smaller I would not have made a big deal.
I also seriously doubt the choice was made to be more inclusive of others.
I’m not a glasses biggot I just don’t like the anime pikachu plus crypto bro icon WITH glasses as it just over the top. Like why not just put a standing desk in the background as well.
Like if it was an actual GNU with tasteful rims then I would have no problem.
By the way I was wearing glasses when I wrote the above.
To be clear, I did not intend to call you a bigot. However, I do find your stance to be come off as gatekeeper-y. IE: People can only wear glasses that fit the style and use cases I find acceptable.
They have one drawing with glasses and one without glasses, I would argue that they are trying to be inclusive. But let's say they aren't being inclusive and don't care about other people. What happens if they wear glasses themselves and are doing it solely to represent themselves? That's also great.
This is the gatekeeper part, this comes off as saying that you're fine with glasses but only in certain circumstances. What happens if they made it big and were pushing on the glasses because they thought it looked cute and added to the dynamism of the drawing?
I also think it's totally cool not to like the drawing.
However getting on a soap box to yell about either fashion changing
or because society has become accepting of something that used to be seen a lot more negatively
Is a really cynical and mean take to have against someone just trying to share some drawings they were proud of (or trying to share the work of their partner that they were also proud of).
BTW I wrote this on my standing desk :)
And wanting to rally against late-stage capitalism and the pervasiveness of marketing is also great. But then I have to ask, why get mad at what you're implying are the victims of the system and not the system itself?
I was wrong. I could make a shitty excuse of it being late, tired and Monday but it was mean spirited of me and I appreciate you guys pointing it out.
I need to reflect where that came from as I’m usually not that ill spirited.
I hope the illustrator doesn’t take anything I said to heart and apologize.
I wear contacts. My grandparents (greatest generation) and their parents did not wear glasses till they were much older.
Look I wouldn’t have a problem with cartoons with glasses and I’m sure given the downvotes I pissed people off but it is fucking marketing just like in the 80s we had everyone He-Man steroid trope we now have this big big fucking black rimmed glasses as hipster irony incel shy approachable girls/guy. Intellect is hot … sort of but fuck differing opinions or the real driver late stage capitalism.
It is bullshit and and will seem lame as fuck thirty years from now.
I’m sorry for the rant.
