This is such a good idea in theory but I don't want my passwords locked to one platform. This goes for practically all password managers. If I want to enter that password in Chrome on Windows, I don't want to painstakingly copy a 16 digit password made from random characters from my iphone's keychain.
Absolutely. Things have improved over the years, there is an official chrome extension for keychain that works on windows (although I’ve never used it so can’t comment on how well it works) it’s also possible to export your keychain database (although only using a Mac). The worst thing about keychain now is that, on iOS, it’s only accessible through settings which makes accessing 2FA codes a pain. I think keychain should be it’s own app.
Which password manager do you use? I am open to trying an alternative but having all my passwords in one place is really scary so I struggle to trust a third party.
You can do a simple shortcut and add it to the Home Screen to access it with one tap:
Open url:
prefs:root=PASSWORDS (it’s case sensitive I think)
And that’s it!
I use Bitwarden, but privacyguides has a few recommendations here
I’ve been using Bitwarden for years and I'm very happy with it. My partner recently moved to 1Password from Keychain and I haven't heard her complain, which is a good thing.
+1 for BitWarden. I moved from 1Password some time ago due to their constantly charging for upgrades and each client. I think the fit and finish / ease of use may be a touch better with 1P but I love that BW has syncing on the free tier and has free clients for every platform.
I’ve found 1Password to be head and shoulders above the other alternatives. I’ve been with them for over 12 years, never been let down.
I'm in the process of moving away from 1Password. i've been using them for ages, well over a decade, but the newest version is just terrible. Unreliable, unintuitive, and they've moved to electron on Mac Os, so performance is awful too. Really disappointing, and going through the steps to downgrade (that they had to post because there were so many complaints about 8) doesn't feel like a long-term solution.
It's such a shame. i used to pay for it for my entire family.
If you use Windows, you can install iCloud Keychain for Windows to access keychain.

and/or use the Chrome extension

This is a gamechanger I had no idea!
Yeah I don't want to enter long passwords either. But I don't really like external password manager like 1password, lastpass and bitwarden. So I stay with my ios password manager. It works pretty fine. I do save my passwords in my desktop browser for easier use.
