They often go on clearance soon- check home stores as fall sets in. We got a snow blower after Christmas one year for 1/4 the normal sticker price.
My apartment has those old 80’s-style air conditioners but we don’t use them because the insulation doesn’t exist. So even having A/C isn’t the answer depending on the building.
My car doesn’t have insulation either but the AC absolutely makes a difference. Maybe your AC unit isn’t working - 40 years is a long time for a unit, may need cleaning or recharging, or just replacing.
Come to think of it, the house I grew up in didn’t have insulation either, and we’d have died with window AC units in the summer.
The A/C actually works quite well for its age. It’s just that after a certain temperature it can’t keep up and I’m heavily inclined to believe it’s due to insulation.
The way I can tell is that as the temperature keeps rising outdoors the unit never seems to shut off. I can see on my temperature sensors (smart home life) that the indoor temperature keeps rising despite the A/C cranking away.
Not that it feels hot inside, it’s still around 10°F cooler. It’s just that the minute you turn it off the temperature climbs to the outdoor temperature in just a few minutes.
