People just don't have the patience anymore to soak in a mood and atmosphere while a story slowly unfolds.
I feel like it also wasn't marketed at all. The only reason I knew about it is because I check what's playing in IMAX every month.
I never saw a single ad or any hype for it
I must say that I felt the atmosphere was forced in 2049. In the original, the atmosphere was part of the setting and not lingered over. 2049 forced the audience to look at it, โsoakโ in it as you say, and I thought it was detrimental to the progress of the film. JMO, of course. Still a great movie.
