As an employee of a neutral newspaper Washington Post, I would just like to loudly say that WE ARE PROFITING FROM THIS WAR, THAT IS WHY THIS WAR IS GOOD.

Oh, when Russia would have had to withdraw to its position on February 23 and therefore Ukraine would sacrifice Donbas and Crimea and hand wave away a bunch of war crimes in exchange for not joining NATO.

Seems like a real balanced solution.

The battle lines have not really moved very much, after 500,000 Ukrainian casualties. Was it worth it?

[–] MoreAmphibians@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sure it's been worth it, the US has weakened Russia at a relatively low cost (other than for the Ukrainians).

[–] footfaults@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Have they really though? Can you really "weaken" a nuclear power?

Embarrass, yes. Cause a loss of prestige? Of course, but they're still a nuclear power and that's never going to change.

Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in the 90s they still had a seat at the table in the UN security council and had a say in their sphere of influence. They still had a sphere of influence.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

🤓 Um actually none of Russias nukes work anymore because they are too Russian to maintain them

[–] JaymesRS@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

That number is the estimated combined Russian and Ukrainian wounded and casualties. Try to actually be informed instead of parroting tankie talking points comrade.

[–] footfaults@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Set aside whose casualties are whose and look at the loss of life and disfigurements. Was it worth it? Neither side has made any significant military gains since the spring that justifies these casualty numbers

[–] JaymesRS@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

That argument works just as well for justification of American colonialism and the destruction of Indigenous Americans. Congratulations, that is one amazing take. I’m not even mad, That level of take is amazing. I’m impressed

[–] footfaults@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't know how you take an argument that basically says "a stalemate that just feeds people into the grinder and does not achieve any military objective, means that this war needs to come to an end" and claim that means I'm justifying colonialism and indigenous genocide.

On multiple levels, pigpoop

[–] JaymesRS@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

On a short-timeline view (which is exactly what we have now in this conflict) that “stalemate that just feeds people into the grinder that doesn’t achieve a military objective*” is exactly what we had at multiple points during the colonial period. Wars like Father Le Loutre's War also spilled over to non combatant citizens just like Russia’s Soldiers have targeted. For that matter, that’s been true of just about any period where one nation invaded another to claim them. The only real difference now is we have gotten exceptionally effective at killing people so the totals are far higher.

Crack a fucking history book. Justification of aggression and invasion against a sovereign nation is a new low.

*- keeping an invading force from progressing is an objective, just ask the North Vietnamese. But you probably think they should have surrendered too based on your logic.

[–] 420blazeit69@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

keeping an invading force from progressing is an objective, just ask the North Vietnamese

Simply stunning

[–] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

I can't believe everyone isn't recognizing the sacredness of these administrative borders from a country that no longer exists. Won't somebody think of the sovereignty? These borders were very convenient for the richest people in the west and they deserve every advantage in their efforts to rob the people of Russia.

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

lmao liberals coming up with nonsensical equivalences that make no historical sense whatsoever is a classic example of their intuition based ignorance

You do understand Crimeans aren't ethnic Ukrainians and the people of Donbass are Russian speakers, like you do understand that basic fuckin fact about the conflict right?

Do you even know how Donbass became part of the Ukraine, obviously you don't but maybe you should ask yourself these questions before you run naked in front of us swinging your miseduction and ignorance like a mace

[–] Romeo@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

The way you type is repellent. For your sake I hope you aren't as smug irl.

[–] brain_in_a_box@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

congratulations

this is one amazing take

I'm not even mad

That level of take is amazing

I'm impressed

When you can't decide which smug redditism you want to use, so you go with all of them.

[–] Bobby_DROP_TABLES@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

Sorry tankies, people dying in war is actually good smuglord

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ukraine sacrificing Crimea? What a cruel thing to make them do, give up land that they've had no control over for almost a decade.

[–] JaymesRS@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Cool, so about ten years after illegal occupation and seizure you’re cool with the rationale of “no takesie backsies” and you still believe Putin will actually stop there.

Have I got a bridge to sell you.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago (1 children)

lol illegal occupation and seizure of land whose residents were begging for Russia to help them?

inb4 but muh Ukrainian sovereignty!!!

[–] JaymesRS@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago (4 children)

You actually believe that protest was spontaneous by residents.

I’m sorry, I was lying before; the bridge isn’t really for sale. I morally can’t feel good about taking advantage of someone that gullible*.

  • PS- If anyone ever tries to tell you “someone wrote gullible on the ceiling” or “you dropped your pocket” they are trying to get you to look to make you look silly. It’s actually a joke at your expense, I just thought someone should warn you.
[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago

you can't seriously swallow us state dept propaganda and scream at anti imperialists to just get in line, while also telling other people they're gullible with some middle school tier redditisms

PS- If anyone ever tries to tell you “someone wrote gullible on the ceiling” or “you dropped your pocket” they are trying to get you to look to make you look silly. It’s actually a joke at your expense, I just thought someone should warn you.

never have i read a comment on the fediverse that so desperately deserved an atomic wedgie and getting stuffed in a locker

[–] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

You actually believe that protest was spontaneous by residents.

Yes.

A lot of people aren't thrilled with the idea of living under ethnic nationalists that intend to use them as scapegoats for the mess of modern Ukraine.

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"Illegal occupation" dude shut the fuck up, the maiden coup goverment was illegal and there's a reason western media doesn't bring up the Crimean referendum

Crimeans spoke loud and clear, they are not Ukrainian, they don't want to be Ukrainian and they sure as shit don't want their region torn apart by a bunch of nazi banderites

The fact you think Crimea is even up for discussion shows just how ignorant and remote you are from this conflict, read anything besides CNN articles you fascist waterholder

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

What are your thoughts on South Korea, Taiwan, and (former) South Vietnam? Edit: also Israel

[–] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Are you surprised that years of genocide in the Donbas came with a cost?
