I agree that the person you're replying to didn't actually refute OOPs claim, but...uhh...I think A=B does mean that B=A

The commutative property of equality is established. You might be thinking of conditionality.

Given:
If A then B, and
B is TRUE

we cannot say for certain A is true

Lisa doesn't get dessert if she doesn't eat her vegetables.
Lisa didn't get dessert

Can we asctertain if Lisa ate her vegetables?
